I'm in the market for a new external hard drive. The one that's caught my eye works with an ethernet connection and can transfer data at 10/100/1000 Mbps. How can I tell if my laptop can support the 1000 Mbps speed? In my network connections I can see an icon reading "Local Area Connection/Broadcom NetXtreme 57xx Gigabit Controller". Gigabit = 1000Mbps, right?

Yes but the hard drive won't be able to write at that speed just to let you know.
