    right lads

I got a M1710 there a month ago for my brother, but i seem to be the one using it most. its a well specced model, with a 7950 GTX card

    anyhoo

I think I got a problem with the graphics, i had this problem of glitching, flickering when opening web pages etc.

I stuck on new drivers I got with a modded inf from 3d guru or something, and it seemed to fix it

however, just a while ago i booted up the machine and hey presto, opened a web page and the same glicthing, flickering

so, what next? is this just a s/w issue or is it serious? I already had to get a new wlan card for this laptop.

    any suggestions?

    cheers.

If its only a month old I'd ring dell straight away, if its not something very simple try and get a replacement out of them.

    I'd second that.

First of all do a factory restore - that's what they are going to get you to do anyway. Then have a look at various other websites, ahem, to see if you can narrow down if it is text/graphics/AJAX type pages. Or it could be the screen itself.

Is it just websites? If so, it might be a bogey install of Internet Explorer (unlikely). Try the same websites with Firefox and Opera.

onto dell there a min ago, a dude did the remote desktop thing, he installed (ancient) dell drivers, i rebooted, same way.

    still glitching.

got a service code and was told to ring back

i had another xps before this and never saw something like this happen before, me thinks it could be a nasty hardware problem....

well, onto dell boy for an hour tonight, he told me to resit the lcd cable.

still same way. so basically it looks like a fubared lcd or 7950gtx.

I got this on ebay, from dell outlet. he said he couldnt verify my warranty and to ring the 1850 number monday.

I deffo got a 1 yr warranty tho, they changed the WLAN card a month ago.

strange he rebuffed my warranty details, he said my warranty was expired! how can that be

gotta ring them monday or im left with 1,500e paper weight.

    its the lcd.

had the same problem with mine. and when i broke my screen few days ago, dell came and replaced it. asked him about the flickering aswel and he said its the screen.

booted it up and not a problem since.

If its from the Dell outlet theres a standard 1 year warranty on them all, the service tags of the machines are "reprogrammed" as soon as you receive the item to a basic 1 year warranty.
If its within one year you should still be covered fine. I used to ,back in the day when the ebay outlet was a secret, hawk for machines with 3 year warranties left, little did I know they got downgraded to 1 year :(
Anyways you should be well covered but I wouldn't rule out that graphics card out of the troubleshooting equation.

    hmmm

well if RMC says its the screen, id take his word, i thought myself that was the problem. gotta ring dell tomorrow and sort this out. no way could anyone afford to repair laptops like these at their own expense, graphic card or lcd panel cost $$$$$$ to get repaired!

oh ya, dell boy in usa says they only do replacement lappies if the problem arises after 21 days for n america warranty on xps machines.....?

so wont be getting a new laptop. just a new lcd:rolleyes:

yeah they will come and remove the lcd from the back plate and change it over.

    takes about 40 mins.

    hope you get it fixed.
