What you want depends on what you'll be doing. Typically, you'd want a circular polariser and a neutral density filter. As with everything else, eBay is your friend.

Depends on what you plan to be photographing.....helios is spot on however you may want to consider looking at 'kit' options (made by Lee / Cokin et al) - rather than screwing the filter directly onto your lens you buy adaptors to suit each lens and the actual filters can be used across all of your lenses. I suggest you have a look at their sites to further understand the actual setup. They offer far greater flexibility but cost more.

Whatever you do I dont suggest getting the cheapest possible filters as they are more likely to ruin pictures rather than improve. Putting a cheap glass filter on your expensive lens makes no sense. If looking for a 'cheaper' screw-in alternative then I can suggest the Hoya Pro series - slimline and does what it says on the tin.

i take alot of different types of photos.landscape, nature mostly but also take portrait and still life(is that the right word as in photos of random objects).i have a canon eos 350d with 18-55mm lens also thinking of getting a sigma 70-300mm lens.how is it possible to know which filter fits which lens.thanks for all the help so far.

For both those lens's, you'll need a 58mm filter. On the lens, you'll see a number (in this case 58) with a circle and a vertical line through the circle. That's your filter size...

floydmoon1 I might be incorrect but looks like you are just after a filter to protect then lens glass? - if so then as before I recommend the Hoya Pro series. (there are of course loads of others - it's just a product I have used and found to be decent)

If you require filters for a different reason then let us know and we can give further info/advice

    Cheers

well was looking for other filters but will get one to protect the lens aswell.i think i will buy both circular polariser and a neutral density filter as helios recommended.what are decent brands not too cheap but not too expensive.

Well, as with everything there is a cheap and expensive, but if you go with the cheap, it could reduce the quality of the pics since it's the first layer of glass the light will be passing through. Hoya is your way to go...
