Laptop Travel Insurance

    Hey,

Just wondering does anyone know of a travel insurer which will:

    a. Let you add a laptop to your policy.
    b. Insure a laptop against theft/accidents internationally as a standalone policy.

    (US laptop, Irish resident)

I'm off on a trip in a couple of months and planning on doing a bit of work as I go. WorldNomads.com used to provide option a but not anymore, and I've trawled the web but everyone I find insist upon the laptop having UK specs and you being a UK resident.

    Any help would be great.

    J.

I too would be interested to find out some info on this topic, have had very little success myself bar being told blankly "put it on yer house contents insurance". Which doesn't exactly solve the problem.

Maybe the property boom has meant a decrease in the market for standalone laptop insurance :-)

    I don't, unfortunately, have a house.

if you bought the laptop on a credit card you may be covered for 6-12 months theft depending the card company. you will also find that most brands have a warranty department (some include theft & accidental damage) who will be very happy to sell you warranty

Wow... cool, I'm actually gonna shop around for a credit card in the coming weeks, and then buy the laptop. That's some really great advice.

Will post if I find a way to work it ;-)

    Cheers.

    hi
i was wondering this same thing as i am going to the usa for 7 weeks and need to bring my laptop. it seems like i would need to add "business equipment" insurance to the policy? even though on the premium option "personal baggage" might be covered up to €3,000 the policy i'm looking at (with annualmultitrip.ie) has a single item limit of like 150 or 200 euro.
anyone got any other ideas or experience about this?? i just want to know what the most sensible option is. business cover is about 10euro more, but overall the whole policy is working out pretty expensive for me.

I have my laptop and DSLR camera insured (FBD) as an all risks addon to my house policy, they are specified on the policy (make, model, serial no, ect). All risks then covers as you would think all risks, travel, accident, robbery and any thing else you can think of, its domestic in my case but I'm sure you can get a business version. Ring your insurer, and ask.

My old lappy was stolen a couple of months ago, and I had a cheque from FBD within 10 days, priced on a new for old basis.

thanks. i don't own a house or have contents insurance, and even if i could get it i wouldn't have time before i leave. i was just wondering what people in my situation (young, finished college, living in rented accomodation..) do when they need to bring their laptop/expensive camera/whatever away? it seems like there should be a simple solution i can't see, because i imagine it must happen a lot??

    Approx €100 with Allianz.
Just take out an Insurance policy on the contents of your bedroom, minimum sum insured €20k, then add the laptop onto the specified all risks section.
