Ooh, this sounds like a great event! I love Paul Gravett's contributions to Neo mag and his articles on manga, I'd love to see the classic Astro Boy, Paprika is absolutely fantastic, and I've always heard good things about Nausicaa and the super-wierd Angel's Egg. And surreal anime is my middle name...
I wonder if I can persuade my Japanese teacher to go down there...

I've been in contact with one of the organizers and she informed me that the Nausicaa screening is actually over 18's due to alcohol at the event. It says 16+ on the information card.

Shame as I have two 16 year old sisters who would've loved to have come along.

Ah well, they can go to the rest of the weekend.

Are there many people from going to this? I'll be there on Saturday, and on Sunday afternoon.

They are not issuing tickets but will have a list of names. They encourage everyone to arrive early so that they may check in at the Library's Manga/Anime Information Desk and take their seats before the beginning of each event. All of the events are free of charge and have now been fully booked. The desk will be managed by Chester Beatty Library Volunteers. They will be identifiable as they will be wearing badges.

The current schedule of events is as follows:

    FRIDAY 1 FEBRUARY (18.00 to 21.00) (18+)

    Sponsored by Tiger Beer

    18.00 open

18.15 welcome and opening comments (Jenny Siung)

18.20 introductory comments to screening (Paul Watts)

18.30 screening: Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (1984, 116 min.)

The second feature directed by Hayao Miyazaki (Spirited Away), this film takes place on a planet devastated millenia beforehand by war and environmental apocalypse. Facing pressure from other countries, encroaching giant insects and poisonous fungi, Nausicaä, the teenaged princess of the Valley of the Wind, finds that compassion and determination might not just save her people, but also the entire world. (Japanese with English subtitles)

    20.30 post-screening reception

    21.00 close

    SATURDAY 2 FEBRUARY (11.00 to 17.00) (16+)

    11.00 open

11.20 introductory comments to screening (Paul Watts)

11.30 screening: The Birth of Astro Boy (1963, 25 min.) The very first episode of Osamu Tezuka's TV show Astro Boy that started the whole anime revolution as we know it today. This is the version that was syndicated in the USA in 1963. (English dubbed)

12.00 screening: Gaseous Beings (1963, 25 min.) The 20th episode of Tetsuwan Atomu (the original Japanese title of Astro Boy), shown on Fuji TV in 1963. (Japanese with English subtitles)

    12.30 lunch break

14.00 talk: Paul Gravett, author of Manga: Sixty Years of Japanese Comics, will present an illustrated talk on the popularity of the medium.

15.30 talk: Irish creators Sinéad Lynch (writer) and Leeann Hamilton (illustrator), winners of Tokyopop's Rising Stars of Manga competition, discuss how they come up with their ideas and turn them into a finished work.

    17.00 close

    SUNDAY 3 FEBRUARY (11.00 to 17.00) (16+)

    11am Screening of Paprika (91 mins) 16 +

14.00 talk: The Surreal Art of Anime (Paul Watts) A presentation of some of the more visually and/or narratively out-there anime, ranging from the dreamlike to the outright bizarre.

    15.00 break

15.20 introductory comments to screening (Paul Watts)

15.30 screening: Angel's Egg (1985, 71 min.) A piece of genuine surrealism directed by Mamoru Oshii (Ghost in the Shell), this brooding and highly symbolic film follows a little girl as she struggles to protect her prized possession, a large white egg, and how she reacts when she encounters a mysterious young man. (Japanese with English subtitles)

    16.40 closing comments (Jenny Siung)

    17.00 close

It's pretty fun so far! 35 folk turned up today, so there's 70 or so places free.

Missed today unfortunately. Was at it last night though. Great seeing Nausicaa on a big screen.

Heading in tomorrow. Glad I haven't gotten around to watching Paprika yet.

I wasnt able to go on the Friday but I went yesterday and Saturday , Paprika was excellent a beautiful piece of cinema, The episodes of Astro boy on saturday were good fun. I found Paul Garrett's talk on Manga a bit long winded , He went off on alot of tangents, he also had a horrible habit of over pronouncing the word Manga so it sounded like Maaanga. I missed Paul Watts talk Unfortunately , overall a nice little anime and manga festival fair play to the folk at Chester Beatty for putting it on hopefully it wont be their last.

I heard this too, the only reason I didn't go is because it was booked out.

    Angel's egg! :p

Paprika really did live up to all the hype. Very impressive film. Will be sourcing out a DVD.
I was a bit annoyed myself about the 'booked out' thing too. Had a tutor from college who was interested in heading along but couldn't get tickets.

Shame there isn't anywhere showing anime on a regular basis like this. There are an absolute rake of films I'd love to see on a decent big screen.
