    Hi all
recently bought a used Dell laptop that had no hard drive - new HDD is now in place but I have no OS. If anyone could point me in the right direction of places that do good deals on XP I'd appreciate it.

    Thanks

dont think youll find xp anywhere cheap (legaly anyway) but in the meantime, try downloading ubuntu. Free operating system, and easy to use.

Is there no license key on the lappy or is it a win2k license key or something?
The reason I ask is Dell will send you a copy of the original CD's if you have a license for it already which you may have.

You are paying for the license not the CD, so as long as you have a valid license key (maybe on the bottom of the laptop) you can just download a copy of XP from anywhere ;)

    /sub-par legal knowledge

Alternatively, download a copy of ubuntu linux which is better than XP!

It's available from Dabs for €73. I agree with the other posters who recommended Ubuntu. This is a perfect situation to install Ubuntu, it works well with notebooks especially Dells. If you can't download it you can request a Ubuntu CD to be sent to you completely free, although it might take a couple of weeks.

    Hi guys
first off thanks very much for bothering to reply, I appreciate it greatly. The laptop does ahve codes on the base so I'll try them out, and if not I'll give Ubuntu a go. Cheers!!

Hi Johnnycabs, I was thinking about this and as TimAy and layke said if you have a Microsoft Certificate of Authenticity (COA) label underneath your laptop you can just re-install Windows XP using a Dell re-installation CD. The CD is available free or for a small charge from Dell. Alternatively I have a Dell Windows XP re-installation CD and Ubuntu 7.04 CD I can send to you, just PM me your address.
