Do you carbon offset?

Admittedly some carbon offsetting schemes have been criticised, but have you considered offsetting your carbon emissions or have you done so?

I read about a scheme earlier this year which seems to be endorsed by a number of highly respected people - Cool Earth at www.coolearth.org - and made the decision to support the scheme.

Also read in last Sunday's Sunday Times Culture magazine that No Frontiers presenter Kathryn Thomas offsets her flights and so perhaps she's the first Irish celebrity to do this...the only other people I can think of that have said they're doing this are John Gormley and Eamon Ryan.

Make the differentiation between publicity hunting and personal beliefs.

Don't worry within the next 5 years you will have no choice in relation to this issue. Carbon offsets will be mandatory if people do not object now.

As many people may have noticed, I myself am not I favour of this. Therefore do not use the troll word again.

um is there something I'm missing in your response, casey212?

I genuinely thought perhaps one or two people on here might've used a carbon offsetting scheme or at least considered doing so.

Well, maybe you overestimated the gullability of the people reading this forum.

Kathryn Thomas, Gormley or any other do-gooder with alternative motives can do what ever they like. I could not care less, but why do these celebrities expect me to follow suit, and then force me if I do not???

Kasey, please don't listen to this guy, he's been posting his Global Warming theories all over this board for a while now.

Carbon offsetting, while not the best of solutions is at least a step in the right direction, that said I don't think you can justify a long haul flight by the amount of trees you plant.

    Correction, ANTI global warming proofs.

Oh, a long haul flight cannot be justified. What if I needed to visit a sick relative on their death bed, would mother earth take precidence?

I'm not going to get into an argument because in case you didn't read the title, this thread is about Carbon Offsetting. Stop turning everything into a Global Warming debate!

And what is the foundation of the carbon tax. Here I was thinking it was fundamentally based on the reduction of global warming.

Maybe you or someone else can correct me on this inexplicable error.

Listen, You've contributed your 2 cents, and now you're done. What you are doing to this forum is borderline spamming.

Some advice, don't bring arguments down to the personal level.

Have you ever heard the saying, "when in a hole stop digging".

I am not attacking you, you are absolutely entitled to your beliefs, what I am asking you to do is to not turn every thread on the forum into a discussion about whether or not global warming is real.

Ok lets analyse your argument. Were or were you not the first person to mention global warming on this thread?

    Once again excuse my ignorance.

Only an idiot would start a thread about carbon offsetting, and then only an absolute clown would voluntarily donate. "Hoodwinking" would be the masonic term for such schemes, and you my friend have just been fleeced.

But considering you are a "good guy" maybe you would also like to contribute to my "save the whales" foundation.

    Jack,

You seem to be making a personal attack on this mans opinions on the subject. You alone mentioned global warming in this thread.

I myself believe carbon offsetting is yet another trick up the sleve of the government in the pursuit of yet another tax.

    Regards

    Ian

Who are you to resort to calling anyone an idiot.

Tell me this Geeko, if Kathyrn Thomas jumped of a bridge in order to reduce the population (-1 hot, yet dull blonde) would you follow suit?

Surley one less Geeko would do more for the environment that a geeko could do by donating money? Oh, and another thing, what happens with the money donated, how does it save the earth?

I would prefer to keep my hard earned cash, the government already gets more than its fair share from my wages.

    Regards
    Ian

    Who said that they are?

However, in a matter of time carbon offsets will be mandatory.

With printers and copiers I only use one side of the paper, result twice as much into landfill, and paper is made from CO2.

Here 6/7% of our emissions are from air travel.

Where the money goes depends on the scheme - some are for tree planting schemes - others for wind and solar energy schemes in places like India and China.

I mentioned Kathryn Thomas because she seems to be the first Irish celebrity to do this - I wasn't implying that we should all follow her example or anything.

Carbon offsetting and carbon trading are not the same thing.

Nobody is forcing anyone to carbon offset - it is an entirely voluntary scheme. As Gekko has already said, some of these schemes are far from perfect, but there are plenty of options.

Voluntary up to this point. Give it a few years until people are further brainwashed and then see it forced on everyone, not just the sheeple.

    (Just ignore him)

I think you've got to look carefully into the company that's running the programme, and find out as much as you can about their projects, then make up your own mind. I've heard of a few dodgey tricks, like calculating the carbon offset of new tree plantations based on the carbon absorption of mature plantations (many multiples, decades hence). It can hardly do any harm though.

I believe when Al Gore came in for criticism for his 4,000 sq ft mansion and other aspects of his own personal lifestyle, he said all his emissions were offset.

That is pure speculation. If you're going to make predictions then at least back them up with some fact-based rationale.

I don't really agree with that sort of behaviour. I would rather people such as himself tried a little harder to be a bit more economical with their energy use.

You dont really agree with that sort of behaviour???

I think we need to be more critical.

This man is swanning around the globe in private jets, owns who knows how many mansions, YET HAVE THE CHEEK TO LECTURE US ON SAVING THE ENVIRONMENT!.

This shows to me the contempt that these people show for plebs like us, they are caught out time and time again yet we never complain. We are happy to saunter on in the 9-5 hell, reading this propaganda.

Look at Ahern, caught red handed, yet that knowing smirk never leaves his smug face.

As Howard Beale says (in 1970's, so true today)

"'I'M AS MAD AS HELL, AND I'M NOT GOING TO TAKE THIS ANYMORE!' I want you to get up right now, sit up, go to your windows, open them and stick your head out and yell - 'I'm as mad as hell and I'm not going to take this anymore!' Things have got to change. But first, you've gotta get mad!... You've got to say, 'I'm as mad as hell, and I'm not going to take this anymore!' Then we'll figure out what to do about the depression and the inflation and the oil crisis. But first get up out of your chairs, open the window, stick your head out, and yell, and say it"

I'm not sure how Al Gore has been caught out "time and time again"? And besides, it seems to me that most people complain - you are complaining right now in fact.

I don't work 9-5 (I would imagine a lot of people don't) and I don't know what this propaganda is that you're referring to.

So you have lost your memory as well. Look at how schemes were introduced in the past and apply this knowledge to the present. (Assumming that is politically correct, I would not want to offend anyone in a white coat).

Look at the introducting of driving licences, tv licences, insurance on vehicles, safety passes etc.

It does not take a genius to work this out. As for fact-based rationale, well what to you want. You can hardly expect a declaration in the paper, this only occurs after the event.

Im refering to how the government have been caught out time and time again.

How anyone can respect the government astonishes me.
