Anybody know some places that do summer internships for 1st year college students in dublin?

I have been looking around for something in the finance sector, eg bank or accountancy firm but have been unsuccessful so far.

I am willing to try out anything really, but just to gain experience in the business world.

Big accountancies and solicitors wouldn't give internships to anything but penultimite year, or final year students (at least I have never heard of them doing it and I did apply myself after second year and was told this by them). That said this is not really too much of a downside as their internships by and large a pretty useless.

The banks do take on summer staff on temporary contracts but AFAIK don't do internships.

If you want to do an internship the best option to look outside ireland. The Washington Ireland programme is a good example and they do take first year students (although I think they prefer a little older). http://www.wiprogram.org/

If you are interested in WIP PM me with your e mail address and I will pass it onto someone who did the programme (He generally is willing to spend some time firing off an e mail to promote it but I can't promise it)

yea generally internships are aimed at penultimate year students; firms are generally only interested in employing people for the summer with the aim of retaining many of them. That said I have heard that PwC did have one or two first years last year in their taxation department so that could be worth a shot.

many second year students do try the London Multinationals mainly with the investment banks and large corporate law firms. I know a fair few of the Banks take on first years for their "spring week". As with all internships in London competition is fierce; for law and banking there can be as many as 50 applicants for every intern place. That said it shouldnt put you off. i have done a number of these internships and a good CV, research and enthusiasm go a long way.

Finally these internships are well worth all the hassle which the application process requires. Retention rates for interns are anywhere between 85%- 100%. They are also brilliant craic with savage social events, plus some of teh firms pay about 1,500 euro- Not bad for an intern.

JP Morgan and Goldman Sachs are worth checking out.

A bit off topic, but does everybody who applies for JP Morgan have to do their Online Numerical Test. I have a friend who was called to do that test and she said it was highly confusing! I also meant to add, this is for a technology position, why would they be asking her about Investment Banking and the likes for a technological position.

Because you'd be working for an investment bank

    Test's themselves are usually generic

But even for the technology position, surely it would be more suited to be asking questions regarding technology! Thanks anyway. Good look OP, hope you can find something!

They assume you're competent on the computers. You don't need to be a whizz, its a bank not google.
