the beep test

    as part of my marathon training i've decided to do the beep test once a week.

    i cant find a link anywhere on the web for what results different type of athletes should expect.

    i.e
    level 10-12: pro footballer
    level 12-14: pro athlete
    level 14+: marathon runner

    or something similar.

    anyone have any ideas?

    Hi there

    I'm not sure if there is any steadfast rule of thumb, perhaps someone else can help.

    When I was playing at a high enough level of GAA, we were expected to reach 13+. Midfielders which I was one, were expected to be at 14+ mid season. Aiming for 14.5 to 15 at whatever our peak time was i.e. our Championship objective.
    I was abroad for a season and the expectation was 13+ also.
    League of Ireland back in the day was 11+......

    Hope thats of some help.

    Also, when I run these tests with teams, I use the Australian Defence Forces beep test, its the best one I've ever done, fair and accurate. http://www.defence.gov.au/army/artc/fitness.html

    The bleep test is a test to approximate a persons VO2Max. The bleep test is not recommended for runners or cyclists and is generally only used by field sports people.

    A persons VO2Max is not usually their limiting factor in marathon running.

    Doing a bleep test once a week is worse than pointless. You would be better off doing a marathon specific running session or nothing at all.

    Level 14+ represents a vo2max of approx 60 mls/kg/min
    Level 15+ represents a vo2max of approx 65 mls/kg/min

    A half way decent club runner would be expected to have a vo2max of at the very least 60-65, anyone halfway speedy would be either low 70s or have a fantastic running economy.

    i'm also playing for a football team, (train once a week, match once a week) and i cycle to and from work every day (about 7.5 miles total per day, 5 days a week).

    how will my football fitness be effected by marathon training, i.e. loss of pace etc. would the bleep test not help in some way at all? if not im happy to dump it from my plans, just curious.

    Equally, how will cycling daily effect my scheduled rest days etc?
