    hey dudes
i have digiweb metro lite broadband at home
complete with a thomson cable modem which provides one "lan" or ethernet port to connect to a single pc
what i'm looking for is some kind of router to plug into this port so that i can plug in two computers and also a third wirelessly
digiweb say i need an "ethernet router" or "wireless ethernet router"

so can anyone recommend a cheap one or even point out what breed of equiptment i need, i see alot of stuff advertised as "cable routers" or "adsl routers" but not much for "ethernet router"

    any advice appreciated,
    thanks, jim

The standard answer is Linksys WRT54G running Linux.

Certain models come with it by default

if it doesn't then you can flash with the likes of DD-WRT instead.

Cable router is what you're looking for. Basically anything that has an ethernet WAN port and not a phone line one (that will only work for DSL).

Linksys WRT54G will work as stated above. You can get the linux version or the standard version. Both will work out of the box and just require a few settings.

Most seem now to be termed Broadband Wireless. Instead of connecting the PC to the cable modem you conect the router to the cable modem. The router then handles the conections wireless or wired to the computers and if it has the option some also have USB options to add a printer and an external harddisk for sharing.
If you don't ever intend upping the bandwidth then almost any old router of this type will suit. Something like the Dlink DI-614+ should be very cheap now, about £5 I suspect. That will handle upto about a 5mb broadband but you need newer models for above.

If you take a laptop traviling take a look at www.fon.com well worth it imo.

If you setup wireless make sure you enable security ALLWAYS.

If you buy a plain WRT54G now, you'll probably get a v7 or v8 or so, which doesn't use Linux.
