Customs question?

I know you're probably fed up of hearing questions about custom's fees. Well here ya go again, I hope that someone here can answer it or link to a gov doc that answers it.

I'm getting a body made and painted in the states, its due to be sent very shortly. Do you know if customs fees are applicable for it?

I've bought smaller parts from the states and haven't had to pay on those but they were mostly under $100, this is going to be much more. I heard something before that if the item is a "replacement part" it's not deemed the end product so no customs fee's/vat has to be paid. Is this true?

I just want to make it clear, I am in NO way trying to avoid paying customs or vat. I just want to be clear as to whether I have to with this or not. If I do, fine.

    Cheers. :)

Right, seeing as no-one replyed to my thread but a lot read it. I figured I'd give an update. I received the parts a few weeks back with no customs charges payable. :)

As I understand it, customs duty is applicable. Most likely you weren't charged because of a misdeclaration. Not being the "end user" applies if you're registered for VAT but is otherwise not relevent, and "replacement part" in the context of customs would refer to parts issued for warranty repair/replacement.

All will be revealed soon. ;)

Eoin, the item was declared at its true value and contained the usual customs doc's from the seller with duplicates etc. Possibly it was overlooked by customs?

You would have been due to pay customs for sure, no question about that. It obviously slipped through unnoticed. It happens.

    Pics etc.

Could have been declared under an incorrect category. They don't overlook stuff so much these days but I'm sure that could still happen too. And when in doubt they probably just let stuff go. ;)

I recently got caught for import duty using a well-known courier service (which will remain unnamed). The initial bill I got seemed quite high so I queried it and it was reduced (a bit fishy, but hey). Anyway, as I was paying the driver he said to me that it would be better to get stuff sent via USPS and delivered by regular post as they (the company he works for) automatically collect when it is over close to the €50 mark, whereas with regular post this only happens when it is over €250. I have found nothing to back this up in writing anywhere, but I will say that I have had some stuff sent recently enough by post which arrived without any customs charges although there probably should have been. I know that it used to be the case a few years ago that USPS were distributed by GLS in Ireland and they used to also automatically collect, but An Post doesn't seem to run as tight a ship.

It just said "Guitar Parts" as far as I know.

Oh well, there doesn't seem to be anything written in stone about this kinda stuff (that I can find). It's a given when you import instruments that you have to pay customs&vat but kind of unknown when it comes to parts.

Voodoo, I'll post up the details soon enough.
