    Hi,

I'm interested in re training for a change of career direction and have decided that I'd like to study accountancy. My preference is for Distance Learning as I live in a rural location and have a young family. Any suggestions as to a decent course?

Also, can someone explain to me what the fundamental differences are between ACCA, CPA, CIMA etc.?

Thanks in advance for your help,
    AFD

    Hi Tracy1002

How are you finding the distance learning course?

Can you let me know how much it's costing you?

    Regards

    Hi

I have just started an acca course via distance learning through bpp ireland. They roughly cost about e250 to e350 per exam if you are doing the final exams. I am doing f4 and f5 , course only just started so cant really say yet how i am finding it, I was exempt from f1to f3 as I just finished a Certified Accounting Technician course which I did part time through a college but as far as I know this can be done home study. Go to accaglobal.com , you can get there contact numbers there and they can advise you as to what is best to do and where the courses are being run.

ACCA is extremely popular and its globally recognised.
CPA is less popular and not sure if its in many other countries.
CIMA seems to be the least popular but I think its might be a different type of accounting.

The main 3 colleges in Dublin are DBS, Griffith and Independent Colleges. You can check prices on their websites or email them. Don't forget there are ACCA exam fees to pay as well (and registration fees and yearly subscription fees).

Having a guess I'd say it would cost you under €1,500 per year for distance learning including all the fees (and doing four exams per year which is kinda the usual). Possibly more if you want to do the revision courses.

You can get tax back on course fees at 20%. Form available on revenue website.

If you have no accounting experience at all I would suggest to do a bookkeeping course, you can do a crash course which won't take you that long.
Kilroys College do a distance learning course in bookkeeping, simplified and very helpful staff.
The Acca is very popular and I have been told it is not half as difficult as the IATI.

HI JUST IN REPLY TO THE COMMENTS HERE ABOUT ACCA DISTANCE LEARNING COURSES

I SIGNED UP WITH 7CITY.COM FOR THEIR DISTANCE LEARNING PREMIER PACKAGES FOR P1 AND P3 (INTERNATIONAL PAPERS) IN SEPTEMBER '08 HAVING SEEN THEIR ADVERT IN THE ACCA SA MAGAZINE.
I REALLY WOULD RECOMMEND THEM. THE PACKAGE I CHOSE INCLUDED BOOKS, NOTES, PLAN TO TACKLE COURSE, ACCESS TO RECORDED LECTURES, QUICK QUESTION TESTS, EMAIL A DAY MULTI CHOICE QUESTION TO KEEP YOU ON YOUR TOES, MOCK PAPERS AND MUCH MORE.
THE ABILITY TO ACCESS ALL OF THIS VIA A SIMPLE PASSWORD AND PIN HAS BEEN A GREAT HELP TO ME - SO IF YOU CAN'T MAKE IT TO LECTURES OR ARE FINDING THE HEFTY FEES HARD TO COME UP WITH - CHECK OUT 7CITY.COM - YOU WONT BE DISAPPOINTED !
