Anyone know what happened tonight?

I was walking by TCD tonight around 22:30 and a Garda van and two squad cars pulled very authoritatively into the little driveway up to front arch and a few guards on foot went running in too. Looked pretty serious, an unmarked Garda car was heading there too by the looks of things. Didn't hang around but was curious as to what was going on? Surely there's very few people around for there to be a need for that many gardai on campus.

Was waiting for a bus at the time and saw a member of college security head into the Provost's house courtyard entrance carrying some form of paperwork in a folder. There were quite a few cops around alright, about 10 were coming through front arch as I was exiting and looked to be heading towards Nassau street entrance.

Didn't have time to get nosy though so am still in the dark too!

A daring attempt to nick the Book of Kells, anyone? Actually the Brian Boru Harp was nicked once.

Wonder what was going on. Hope it's nothing serious.

It looked serious, the place was swarming. It looked like it was based around front arch as the little security wagon was parked on the campus side of front arch.

A mate of mine broke the class of the cabinets in the front arch on his 21st years ago.

That Gardai were called and 10 of them turned up. Maybe something similar?

just read in the times about the boat club boats being vandalised in waterford.

€65,000 worth of damage..........that's gonna hurt.

(i know this is nothing to do with original post but this may now be the criminal/wrong side of the law thread, who knows!)

the Provost's house alarm went and college security didn't confirm it was a false alarm in time

They wasted all that Gardaí resources for that??

Yeah, what a waste! The logical thing to do, as I see it, is to automatically assume that it was a false alarm and rest on their laurels until they get any other evidence to the contrary.

Ten guards seems a lot for a house robbery mate.

Especially considering it was nowhere near the provost's house.

that is you being sarcastic, right mark?

Ha I figured he was. So it wasn't the provost's house alarm which went off?

Anyone know what's going on in Ballymun? About six garda cars, sirens ablazing, are after zooming past my apartment.

The Provost has a very valuable (thinks millions of euro worth) art collection in his gaf. Not to mention the decor in general being important in the gay historical sense.

And I bet he keeps the College Mace in there, too.

Think six to seven million euro for that particular part of the collection I think you're talking about. And that's being conservative. If it were to come up together... Individual pieces elsewhere in the house are particularly valuable too, especially that which hangs on the western wall of the dining room.
Not to mention the decor in general being important in the gay historical sense.
What my friend is trying to say there is that the Provost's House is an important representative among the foremost pieces of domestic Georgian architecture in Ireland. It's quite stunning, to say the least.

I'm pretty sure that's kept in the Chapel's vaults. Don't you ever watch the Mace Bearer disappear in that direction on Commencement days? In any case, College has a charming collection of Irish and foreign silverware, much of which is on display in the Provost's House.

But does it take ten guards to stop a thief or did they expect to come up against a gang?

I think I'll choose to take offense at this statement. If you must, please use the common "ghey", rather than the insulting "gay", when slagging something off.
