PS3 won't recognise games/dvd's

    Hi,

Just wondering if anyone else is having the same problem with the PS3 as I am.
Bought the 60gig in late October and have been playing RR7 to death, love it. Anyways, on 22 Dec went to play motorstorm (my second freebie:)) and the machine didn't read the disk. The little circle in the top right corner went for about 5 mins but nothing else, no disk spinning in the game drop down, or anything. Tried RR7 again and nothing, so tried a blu-ray disc and you guessed it.
So got the customer service off the net, rang up and got a very helpful guy. Said it was either a problem with the lens or the drive itself. He heard of it happening before, not a regular problem. He then got in touch with HMV Swords where I bought it to see if they had any 60gig in stock and they didn't, so said they would send me a new one out by courier but it would be early in the new year. Chap couldn't have been nicer.

My problem is that it is now the 2nd of Jan (a long time to be left without a system I paid 500 euro for I thought) and I've heard nothing. Tried to ring the number numerous times today, get the usual automated voice telling me all staff are busy, call will be answered in rotation etc. and after anything between 5 and 15 minutes the number hangs up.
Needless to say am getting very irritated.

Anybody else have any similar problems either with the system or the customer service?

    Cheers.

I had the exact same problem .Rang sony and they said it would take a week or so ,for head office to decide on a remedy.

So I headed into HMV and they offered me a 40GB with €100 cashback.Which I accepted. I preferred a newer machine over an old repaired one.

Sony eventually sent a letter out to me a week after I called ,it was a number of a courier company that I could ring ,to come and collect the PS3.

I'm happy with the 40Gb ,no difference really .

    Thanks Brian,

But really don't want the 40gig. Plus the guy on the phone said they would not replace the 60gig with a machine of lower value.. My main problem is that I an now waiting nearly two weeks without any further contact from Sony and unable to get through to their customer service...

(Cheeky question, but did you give the controller back when exchanging?)

I gave everything back with the ps3 ,even the plastic wrappers on the accessories.

sony ,only want the ps3 when you send it off. You won't get anything back off them ,apart from the console itself.
Also ,format your ps3 with a long format before you hand it back.

Check out the playstation forums from the sony website. You can ask questions there and they will be answered by sony members.

Note: When I rang sony ,I rang them at 8:15am and they answered straight away. They open at 8am.

    Thanks Brian,

Took your advice and rang them at 8.45 this morning, got straight through. The guy said there was little he could do, he was based in the UK and they had passed the details to Sony Ireland, so the ball was in their court so to speak, though if I wanted information the UK call centre was my only port of call. Told me the Ireland branch should have got in touch via letter telling me what they needed from me in order to exchange the PS3... Hope the hurry up:(

Why do the full long format? Just to clear all your details? Only reason I ask is cos it takes up to 3-4 hours

I thought I read somewhere ,that a full format is safer at hiding your details.
A quick format is probably just as good.

I'm not a techie ,so I thought better safe than sorry.

Wouldn't make a difference - if they wanted your details, a format won't stop them.
For example, heres how you properly clean a disk: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Data_remanence#Degaussing
