    Hi,
I have a dell laptop that's just a few months old at this stage.

I want to get a card with firewire 800 and 400 ports on it. 800 for my external hard disk and 400 for a fairly expensive soundcard (around e300).

I read somewhere that the pcmcia standard cannot give you full 800 over the pcmcia interface. Is there any truth in this?

If so would a pc card be a different standard than pcmcia or do they just change the name?

Also and this is a long shot...Will a cheap firewire card affect the quality of the signal going to the soundcard?

I think the max transfer rate of the PCMCIA card bus is 133Mbps. The firewire 800 is 800Mbps so yes, you won't be able to get the full speed because the pcmcia can't handle anything over 133Mbps.

What are you talking about when you say pc card? If you are talking about a pci card or an express card, then it would be different and would nont be compatible with your laptop.

If the laptop is only a few months old than the chances are it has a express card slot and not a pcmcia. This is very different to the pcmcia slot and will support higher speeds.

PC Card= PCMCIA because as everyone knows:
