Is this possible?

I currently have a standard SKY box but am about to upgrade to SKYHD. At the moment, I have a cable running from the back of the standard SKY box into another room to allow me to watch the same channel in both rooms.

When I upgrade to SKYHD, can I move the standard box into the other room and watch the Free-to-view channels without a SKY subscription card in the box?

If so, then in order to do that, do I need a second cable run down from the dish OR can I just run a cable from the back of the SKYHD box? The idea here is to watch my SKYHD subscription channels in one room and only free-to-view channels in the other room.

Apologies if the above questions seem trivial but I couldn't see the answer in the stickies.

you need cable from the dish, connect it to a spare output on the quad lnb

You should be able to get a digital splitter box, in or around €50 which the cable from the dish will plug into (Standard F connectors) and then you can split the cable 2-8 ways?...

In theory sounds good, though haven't seen it been done?. Wait for a second opinion!.

    This will not work

Thats possibly the worst advice I've seen yet on this or any other forum, That will not work for various reasons, the way I explain it to customers is that the LNB (which is the part on the dish the cable connects to) is part of the tuner so an individual feed has to come from this for each box. (for them to work independently)

Aslo does the OP realise that SKY HD needs 2 feeds to the HD box, so just ask the installer to run a third and give him a couple of quid.

Cheers Gents. I was not aware that SKY HD even needed two connections for it to work. I'll just ask the guy to run two new cables giving me a total of three cables (including the existing one). What's a recommended back hander amount?

I also do not have a normal landline (just a wireless phone line through DigiWeb that Sky said was useless last time). I had to pay extra to go without the phone line but will I have to do that again?

    Thanks for advice here.

You wont be able to get Sky HD or Sky+ without a phone line.

You can pay extra for no phone line with standard box but you definitely need a phone line for HD or +

Sorry but thats not true , moved house a couple of months ago , I have sky HD , and both the recording and the HD channels work fine with no phone line , ( there was none in the house when we moved in) .

Sky dont like it , and they kept sending letters , but the above features work fine regardless , the only thing that wont work is box office , it refuses to let you buy a movie without a phone line connected. ( but thats kinda obvious anyway)

By the way , I gave the installer 20 euro for the extra line ( for the old standard box ) and he seemed happy enough. Not bad for 10 minutes work.

Not true I'm afraid according to sky's own email sent to retailers.

    It is true.

You will just have to get an installer who will set it up with no phone and hope sky wont pay too much attention to no callbacks coming in and cut you off. They are supposed to be very strict on this with HD.

So you could get lucky with an installer who will take a back hander (and call in the pairing part) or one of the many i have heard and seen who will refuse to install because of no phone line

    Best of luck though

Nonsense, do a search and read the thread which discusses this issue:

"NO PHONE LINE OFFER IS NOW AVAILABLE TO SKY HD CUSTOMERS.

SKY HD stand alone customers can now receive SKY HD without a phone line. The standard no phone line fee of €37.50 appplies and must be collected from the customer at the point of sale. No phone line for SKY HD and SKY+ is now available for new and existing customers. This offer does not apply to multi room customers."

Yeah and that "offer" was proven to be nonsense and not correct with noone being able to get it offically from sky

Anyway, did think he was talking about multiroom too though but best to check first

Again more wrong information given, TONY is correct that you no longer need a phone line to get SKY, SKY+ or SKY HD, the only service that now needs a phone line is multiroom, which will never change.

Can people who post on these forums please check the information/advice they give is correct before posting. its making a mockery of the good solid advice give by the likes of Tony, when people post totally false advice aswell.
