Self Defence/MA classes for parents & kids in D5 area?

    I have 2 daughters, aged 7 and 5.
I would like to get them involved in some form of martial arts, for the usual health, hobby and self defence reasons.

Can anyone here recommend a class, in or near D5, which would cater for kids of this age?

What would be great is a class which caters for adults & kids at the same times. That way, I could get involved myself.

I have a Judo background, but I think a striking art would be more suitable for the kids. Any suggestions?

Im a striker mainly, boxing is my thing but i'd strongly recommend Judo for kids, and you could get back into it too! striking i'd recommend Kickboxing, Boxing does not allow kids till 9+ due to the nature of it!!

+1 Judo is great fun for kids and adults alike. They can start striking when they get a bit older.

I don't know northside geography so apologies if these are way off but

www.ko-martialarts.com in Glasnevin area. Barry, who post under the name of Roper here, coaches the kids out there. Friendly environment, athletic focus.

www.sbgnorthside.com in the Baldoyle area. Richie Moore is the coach out there for kids. While I haven't seen him coach in person, I've seen the product and it's excpetionally positive with great skills too.

Both these clubs would be my recommendation. They have adult classes as well but I'm unsure of the scheduling.

Of course, the best thing to do would be to move to D24 and train with us :)

I have and he's very helpful and has great patience with beginners, always willing to help lads out if there not getting the techniques, reccomended.

What's the best practice advice for kids starting martial arts in terms of age? 5/6? Or is that too young? I see boxing says 9. My cousin has just turned 6 but is actually quite small, probably the same height of the typical 4 year old. He's mad to do "karate" though.

most martial arts are just kata and hitting thin air so age is not a barrier for kids, boxing is more intense and sparring comes early so kids need to be very disciplined, thats why its 9 is the minimum age in most clubs.

Thanks for the advice lads ... Baldoyle is 5 mins drive for me, so SBGnorthside is probably the handiest. I've heard good things about this place, and read good things on this forum ... so I will check it out for sure.

    Thanks again :)

    Cowzerp,
I've seen how the younglings respond to Richie at competition time, and SBG Northside have dominated (particular in the age groups the OP asked about) with the technical brilliance in Junior Comps. Based on his results, I'd recommend him to anyone wanting to send their children to martial arts schools.

    Nothingcompares,
The skull doesn't quite form/close (forget the exact details of it) for some time, so hitting the head isn't recommended. Hence the age restriction.
