Can't connect to Belkin Wireless G f5d7230 router

    Hi all,

I recently purchased a Belkin wireless router (had been using a Netgear wired router without any problems) and my computer can't seem to connect to it over the wired connection.

I've plugged in the modem into the router and all the connections are lighting up on it but it seems that no packets of information is getting through to the computer (I keep on getting the "limited connectivity" sign) - my computer is sending packets of information to the router though.

Does anyone know what could be the problem?

My set up is currently this
DSL modem ----ethernet cable to---> Belkin router ---ethernet cable to--> laptop's ethernet port.

    Thanks

What are the network card settings on the laptop? (i.e. Static IP address or Dynamic IP address?)
What is the Belkin router set to? Presumably, it'll be Dynamic...

What Operating System is on the laptop?

Windows XP and I'm presuming dynamic IP on the laptop (it's set to automatically obtain IP address and DNS info - I know enough about computers to check the settings but not enough to know what all this actually means).

I think the problem is that it can't get an IP address from the router. Whenever I try the "repair connection" button it locks up at "retrieving/renewing IP address".

    Thanks for the quick reply!

you might be having an issue with the 2 devices trying to dynamically assign IP addresses.

can you plug the laptop direct into the DSL modem, and see what IP you're given? then try it with the belkin?

you might need to set the belkin on the same subnet before plugging in the laptop to that.

had a similar setup and had to give the belkin a static wide area network address, with a different local area range.

If I assign a static IP address will I need to do the same for other computers/wi-fi capable machines? (I have around 4 computers that I would like to be connected as well as things like Nintendo Wii and DS lite etc.)

Currently my LAN's settings is being assigned by "DCHP" is that the modem/router's name?

Your router should be able to hand out ip addresses automatically once it is set up correctly. Have you read the manual? Sometimes you have to give yourself a static ip address to access the config page etc.

DHCP means the router will assign an address to any device connecting to it. the fact you've 2 devices in teh mix can mess this up.

so, again, plug the lappy straight into the DSL router. go to start, run
type "cmd" or "command" hit return.
    (black window opens)

    type "ipconfig" hit return.
take note of these numbers. post them here.

you should connect to the belkin turn off it's DHCP function so it's not reassigning IP addresses, and also change the belkin's IP address so it can be seen on the network along with the PCs, laptops and other devices.

Followed the "simple connection" steps which didn't seem to work and I'm not proficient enough to do it the advanced way (manually setting all the values).

I'll try the static IP address method (hopefully I'll be back online in a few minutes!)

typing in IPconfig this is what I get
    IP address 192.168.1.34
    subnet mask 255.255.255.0
    default gateway 192.168.1.1

how do I turn off the Belkin's DHCP function? In fact how do I connect to the router (the manual had said

"Using your Internet browser, you can access the Router’s Web-Based
Advanced User Interface. In your browser, type “192.168.2.1” (you do
not need to type in anything else such as “http://” or “www”). Then
    press the “Enter” key."

but typing in 192.168.2.1 when connected up to the router in either IE or firefox the http automatically gets inserted and a error page comes up...)

What I would do is put the DSL modem into bridge mode (see the Stickied FAQ) and let the Belkin router handle the connection settings and DHCP. Simplifies the setup.

    What an ordeal!

I just think the computer doesn't like me... anyway this is what happened (nope the router still isn't working)

I was able to log into the modem and put it into bridge mode as the link in the sticky said - the router still didn't work in that mode though. So I try to revert to the old modem settings...
but it no longer lets me log on to the modem settings >:( (when I put 196.128...etc into firefox it comes up with an error page again) In the end I had to reset the modem.

Resetting the modem meant that I lost the DSL log in settings and unfortunately no-one knew what they were...tried calling BT and got through after a few hours and got the username and password...so back to where I started again :(

Appreciate everyone's help though - maybe I'm just unlucky? Looks like the router is heading back to Argos.

to interact with the router, power up the router, don't connect anything else other than the laptop.

The router should assign the lappy an IP address. to check this do the start, run, cmd, ipconfig as outlined above.

the GATEWAY IP address it lists is what you should put in your browser address. you should connect to the router's web page then.
