Rumour has it that Nikon is soon ending D40/x production and replacing the 40 with a new model, the D60 in spring '08.

Apparently this is coming from the same guy who predicted the D3.

    http://www.engadget.com/2007/12/28/nikon-d60-gets-rumored-set-to-replace-the-d40x/

Interesting. I wonder if it'll be a bit more feature-rich than the 40 (focus motor and top status screen please!)?

I had a feeling about this myself.
The silver D40 disappeared from pixmania in the last day or two. I was planning on getting a D40 soon, now im not sure,

    Should I;
    1. Get a D40 now anyway
    2. Wait for the D60 to be released and get that, it will be at least as good
    3. Wait for the D60 BUT then get a D40, as they will drop rapidly in price and will be the better value

If you were going to get the D40 then perhaps you should wait for PMA announcements and then get the D40 if there's a price drop (the camera doesn't become any worse after a newer model is announced!) Unless a) you need to take photos now or b) there is some essential feature on the D60 that you need that you didn't realise you needed.

How long shall I wait to know if (and when) is going to be Pentax K20D?

i went to buy a D40 the other day in the camera centre (i had a voucher, otherwise would have bought online) and they had none in stock. they said they were becoming a little hard to come by as they were being replaced by 'something newer' So if anyone is considering waiting to get a D40 when the D60 arrives you might want to check availability. Then again, may have just been the camera centre

I just got myself a D40x and absolutely love it so far. :)

Price may not drop too much especially if its essentailly the same camera with a couple of bells and whistles. The price of the D200 is holding up well

Thom Hogan offers similar comments. The more interesting comments are regarding the lenses. With the D3 / D300 out of the way. It's time for a nice lens shuffle.

    http://bythom.com/2008predictions.htm

Always worth a read. Roll on PMA...

Second hand prices are far more interesting. The D200 prices have plummeted quite a lot. As have the D2 series bodies.

What price range would you be talking about for a used D200?

pictures on a camera that is widely available at cracking deals is always much better than the posibility of taking better pictures (even when lenses and not megapixeles are the ones taking pictures) with a camera that won't be available to buy off a shelf for many months after released (usual nikon stuff)

it will probably be paired with:

I bought one with the grip for 960 but then sold it on. You should get one from 800-950, dependent on condition.

Is it me or is this lense green?
That would be a great lense to be paired with a good focal ranger:D

Hey thirdfox, did you use the D40 to take the pictures on your flickr?

I think somebody said a d40 with the kit lens for something like 550
    I think that was Berminham

or 350-370 from dzone or digotalrev from HK in ebay (with gifts)
or 385-400 from some sellers in UK (with 2gb memory)

My D40x and lens was £400 sterling, which at the exchange rate I got on the day was just under €600. That was in Jessops in Derry.

Hey thirdfox, did you use the D40 to take the pictures on your flickr?

Yes but don't judge the capabilities of the camera based on my performance...it can certainly do a LOT better than anything I've produced ;)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 923 ✭✭✭Chunky Monkey

But your pictures are so good! Are you using the kit lens?

My dad got mine (inc. lens) for less than €500 in Curries and that was before xmas. Plus there's a €50 cash back deal if you buy it before xmas from an authorised dealer.

*false laugh* oh stop it with the compliments already! :D

I travel between China and Ireland irregularly and the D40 + kit lens was 480 euro in China a year ago. I also have the 55-200mm VR (230 euro in China a year ago) and the SB600 flash (170 euro in China currently).

Irish prices are quite hard to swallow for a student like myself.

Looking forward to the PMA announcements (although my wallet probably isn't!)

I also have the 55-200mm VR

Oh that explains it! I like to say to myself as I look at my fairly awful pictures taken with 18-55mm lens :p

    PA announcements?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,110 ✭✭✭Thirdfox

    http://www.pma-show.com/digitalcameras/

PMA is one of the biggest trade shows for all things imagery - expect lots of announcements from all of the big manufacturers (I know the Canon crowd are very excited about the 5D replacement and the 450D rebel)

    edit:
this was one of the lenses announced at last January's PMA the anti-aircraft missile like 200-500mm f2.8 Sigma
    00176_sigma_lens_500mm.jpg
image taken from the PMA site: http://www.pma-show.com/slrlens/

might get one myself sometime soon ;):p

would you need a tripod for that :D

I see that it comes with a 2x teleconverter so you would convert it into a 400/1000mm 5.6

Bah I bet I'll get just as good images with this $100 lens:
    http://cgi.ebay.com/Opteka-500mm-1000mm-Tele-Mirror-Lens-for-Nikon-Mount_W0QQitemZ300186633487QQihZ020QQcategoryZ3343QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

    or this one:

    http://www.amazon.com/Phoenix-1000mm-Telephoto-Digital-Cameras/dp/B000NORYPM

    ...easier to carry too :p

And I'd probably carry the Sigma on a tank to be honest (very stable platform I've been told)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 923 ✭✭✭Chunky Monkey

Oh my goodness that's a rather large looking lens stuck into such a small looking camera :p What kind of pics would you take with such a big thing??

Would that opteka lens fit on to the D40? I know it says it has a nikon mount but apparently a ot of nikon lens don't fit on the d40? I have a 'universal fit' lens that doesn't fit on my camera

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,484 ✭✭✭✭Stephen

Pretty much every Nikon lens made since the '60s will fit on your D40 but most of the older ones won't autofocus or meter with it. I don't think that Opteka thing will autofocus or meter with anything anyway :)
