    3 8 stringers? Interesting.

If that Rob Arnold had a neck pickup, I'd be seriously interested.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 10,817 ✭✭✭✭Dord

Yup, it seems to be the hot new thing for 2008. Extended range seems to be the way to go, with even Fender catching on bass-wise.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,130 ✭✭✭✭Karl Hungus

Wow. A whopping 3 8 strings? That is something I had not expected. Especially considering the fact that 2 of them are Stef Carpenter signiatures. Has he even used an 8 string on an album before? I would've expected Meshuggah, or Dino Cazares to be the first to have a signiature 8 string.

    Still, very interesting news.

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

Eh, don't both Mesuggah and Dino have signature Ibanezs?

    Eggle 7 String? :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 184 ✭✭SxE Punk

As far as I know the guitar that Dino plays, in Asesino at least, is currently a prototype 8 string Ibanez model.

Back on topic, in the first set of pictures, the open pore finish with the black grain looks off the chart.

    Fender changes for 2008.

American Standard - They've abolished the S-1 switching system, added some new colours, added a higher mass bridge for the basses, and better tuners all round. Also they come with a new SKB style case.

Also, new to the MIA standard gang is a 5 string Precision. Yep, straight forward Precision, none of that PJ stuff! :D

American Deluxe bass models will now have Hipshot ultralites.

Only downside is that the price has now gone up for MIA instruments.

All of Gretsch's new gear is just fab..

    g6136dlcv1_xl_t400.jpg

There's David Lee of the Legendary Shackshakers sig model. Very unconventional for Gretsch but I really like it..

And to those more budget minded..

    Dig that!

There's loads more but I don't want people to mess their trousers at work.

    Me wanty! :D

Bout time fender started doing more 5 stringers. Found it impossible to get a 5 string fender jazz bass with a maple neck and black block inlaysa blac and k body. God i would be all over that bass like feylya on a 7 string eggle.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 11,848 ✭✭✭✭Doctor J

I think it's a backwards step getting rid of the s1 switch. Granted the switch itself was a bit too fragile and awkward, but the options it provided were valid and they could have put in a push/pull pot or something similar and kept the system. Bad form from Fender IMO.

5 string Ps just don't do it for me. That pickup looks wrong, wrong, wrong. Two string retainers too, it looks bleedin crap, just put a bar in FFS

Yea the s1 switch gave it a nice bit o versitility, didnt notice it was gone till u said it. True its not that nice to look at but great for anyone whos wanted one before and couldnt get one.

Question slightly off topic, but what the hell do string retainers actually do?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 11,848 ✭✭✭✭Doctor J

The head stock on an Ibanez or Gibson for example tilts back after the nut, meaning the string are pulled down at an angle onto the nut. The Fender headstock design runs parallel to the neck, although at a slightly lower level, if you look along the neck. The likes of a G string or high E on a guitar, bearing in mind the height of the string post, has barely any break angle over the nut at all... which is bad, hence all Leo's stuff (Fender, Musicman, G&L) all use string retainers to create that angle.

I should wait the extra day or two for bigger pics, but so far this looks interesting [at least to me:rolleyes:]:

New drawbars and new series of cards with supernatural splashed all over the boxes. Then from their videos for the atelier organs:
    http://www.roland.com/demos/en/i0062/index.html
Some very big downloads there but they demonstrate the supernatural sounds as very similar to the "articulate phrase synthesis" from the V-Synth GT.

I'm just guessing here, but surely the S-1 switch is still on the American Deluxe strats? Where it's always been???
Personally I have thought for a long time that Fender are ****ing themselves by having such a bizarre and unneccessarily elaborate and confusing range of models.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,658 ✭✭✭Patricide

You got a point but still, 5 strings are pretty popular these days, not having a selection of them was just stupid imo.
