How generally usefull is a USB joystick

I have 2 small kids who are starting to play kids PC games. They are killing the keyboard. If I get a USB joystick, should it work with most games, e.g the Incredibles, Club Penguin etc. Should I simply able to use it as plug & play?

You could get a usb xbox360 controller (note, wired, not the wireless one), its plug & play, You may have to configure the game to use the controller tho.
