PS3 Copy protection on downloaded games.

I came accross a problem with games I had bought on the PS3 store.
Basically none of them would work ,after I did something with my user name.

I've noticed though that you don't actually have to download the entire game again ,from your download list.

You can click on whatever game first ,when the download starts ,just cancel the download and the game will work.
It looks like the protection is just from the playstation store to the actual game. So once you link the two ,the ps3 recognizes you've downloaded them.

    I hope this was useful.

In order to activate my games ,I had to log onto my network account.
Only this network account can download the games ,so only this account can play/activate them.

Not sure you should be discussing this.

No offence but this is completely legal. ANY purchased game on PSN can be shared with 5 other PSN users. I've shared a few of my PAL PSN games and gotten US PSN games Everyday Shooter and Flow in return.

All you have to do to share your PSN games is to:
Temp change your login password, clear CC details.
PM friend your PSN login, they create new PS3 user
Go to PSN store and then download the user's PSN games.

If anybody has any good games to share, PSN or PM me for a swap:
I have SSHD, LocoRoco, Flow, looking for Calling All Cars, PixelJunk Racers or Pain.

I would love to see the part of the T&C that states that it's alright to share games/allow others to use your PSN account...

Surely account swapping must be some kind of violation of the PSN terms of service? I wouldn't say they're too hot on unauthorised transfer of property either. If they intended it to be possible, it'd surely be less awkward to do.

    Direct link for Sony Q&A:
    INSTRUCTIONS/FAQ ON GAME SHARING

    For the "sender":

    1. Purchase and download a game from the Playstation Store
    2. Go to account management for the account and delete the billing information from your personal information if the PS3 saved your credit card info
    3. Change your password temporarily for the share
    4. Give login info (email address and password) to the receiver
    5. When the share is completed, change the password

    For the "receiver":

    1. In the PS3 XMB menu, add a new user account on your PS3 and sign in to it
    2. Select the network on the XMB and create an existing Playstation Network account
    3. Use the login information given from the "sender" to create the existing account
    4. Login into the account
    5. Enter into the Playstation store
    6. Click on "Download List" on the upper right near the person's userID and select the game you wish to download and hit download
    7. After game is downloaded, notify the "sender" that the download is complete so they can change the password to the account
    8. Enjoy!

    Q/A:

Q: Should I worry about misuse for my account?
A: If you taken the steps to delete your credit card/billing information and changed your password temporary, it should be safe. If you're paranoid about someone stealing your account, only share with people that you really, really trust

Q: Can't I just make a sub-account and use that to share the games?
A: Not sure if this is allowed, but someone could try and report the results

Q: I just received the game from the sender and the game won't play, help!
A: In order to play the game on your PS3, the game must be activated AND the user account that was used to download the game must stay on your PS3. For example, say you created user account "User1" on your local Playstation 3 and you downloaded a full version of Lemmings. After you download the game, you MUST keep "User1" on your Playstation 3 in order for the game to run on your PS3. If you somehow delete the user account, you must relogin with the sender's account and redownload the game. If the game is still on your HDD, simply redownload then cancel to re-authorize the game.

Q: Do I have to login with the sender's account to play the game?
A: No, it just needs to be authorized on your PS3. You can play the game using your account thereafter. Just do not delete the user account as mentioned above or else the game will be locked out.

Q: I'm trying to download the game from the Playstation store but it is not appearing in the store. Where is it?
A: Games that are purchased disappear from the store. You have to download the game going through the "Download List" screen on the upper right of the Playstation Store.

Q: How many times can I share a game?
A: The store says you can share up to 5 different Playstation 3's.

The first link is the only official word there. And it's vague. It kinda refers the user back to the TOS for the downloaded software too. With a very few exceptions, I've never heard of a game with a multi-user licence. The other two links are unofficial.

The process described in that Q/A is clearly not at all what Sony intend their users to do.

I just read about the sharing ,after I had posted earlier.
It's clearly posted about on other playstation websites.

Don't mess with your username though ,or all your downloads are unusable with a copyright warning. Like I did yesterday.:o

If you don't believe me, go to one of your downloaded PSN games and press triangle to bring up information on it.
It will give you info like file size, owner (you) and at the bottom will be some text saying "This content can be used by people other than the content owners. If all other owners are deleted, you will no longer be able to play the content"

Basically that means, I can create a PS3 account of a friend with PSN game I want and download it and play it; as long as I keep that user PS3 account on MY PS3. If I delete that user, I can't play the content as its linked to the owner.

It's perfectly legal to share your downloaded PSN titles with up to five people and I have even heard Jack Tretton talking about it as a selling point for the PS3.

The reason the official Knowledge Base mentions to "review the use restrictions associated with the content you purchased" is that there is one exception to this rule and that is Warhawk, which is understandable given that it is a more 'complete' game than typical downloadable content.

In the case of Warhawk it's not possible to do even if you try anyway because they protect against that. So basically, if you can do it, it's legal, as far as PSN games go right now (using normal means, I don't know of any illegal hacks out there)
