Should I get a 4x4?

I still haven't got a new vehicle yet. I have previously looked at newer BMW's multiple times. However, with my budget, I am not able to find anything good with less mileage than what my current car has. For a the price of a decent BMW, I could get a brand new small car. Small cars are not really my thing though, although there are a few exceptions.

After my recent ordeal of getting my car stuck (well actually, that was the third time I've got stuck in the mud in my current car! Two of those times resulted in having to be pulled out by 4x4's) Of course, my friends found it extremely amusing, whilst I felt like a complete moron.

So I've been thinking about getting a 4x4. If I had a 4x4, I could attend 4x4 events etc which would be fun. I currently lack hobbies, so it'd also give me something to do. (I live in Devon which is fairly rural) I have been looking at the Land rover Free lander, 2000cc DIESEL. My current car is bad enough when it comes to fuel consumption, I don't wanna be worse off. Only problem with the Free landers is that I've heard they're unreliable?

So any opinions or suggestions for alternatives?

if you want a 4x4, go ahead and treat yourself.
    life's too short FFS!

dont agonise over it. And avoid the landrover freelander.......soft,unreliable and will be the bug bear of your life.

Consider an Nissan X-trail 2.2Td, out over 6 years, loads on autotrader.co.uk,reliable,good in the mud for a smaller 4wd.

    happy new 4x4 year.;)

If you really want a 4x4 and go greenlaning ...then don't get a Freelander.
You'll still get laughed at ...they're useless off road.

Get a Suzuki Jimny instead ...cheap to buy, cheap to run, very capable in stock form and easily modifyable if you get bitten by the trial bug.

What about the Suzuki Grand Vitara... with the 2TD it shouldnt be expensive to run...

If you want a 4x4 get a Pajero or a Land Cruiser, anything else is a toy 4x4 and not upto the job if it's a 4x4 you really needed in the first place :D

tbh don't get a freelander as you said yourself and don't get a jimney for god's sake 'cos you will be laughed at 'cos of the name

    Get a bloody hummer

if anyone laughs at you, just drive over them

better still get a hummer with Arnie on the 50mm who can then shoot them and then you can drive over them

I'll shortly be looking myself for a car that can cross a muddy field. Something like a Subaru Forester turbo/Volvo V70 AWD/ Audi Allroad would be what i'd have in mind.

One of the top 4x4/off-road outfits in the U.K. (and indeed, internationally) is in your neck of the woods:

You could do worse than having a chat with them or having a read through their forum.

I dont suppose you are interested in an L200 lwb crew cab 07 as new 5000 miles. 000's worth of extras.
