is there a direct link between say the amazon share price as quoted on the Nasdaq, in dollars, and the euro price where it is quoted on the German stock exchange? Or are both prices running independently of each other?

I don't know for Amazon, but for some other shares, it might be 2 NYSE shares = 1 Frankfurt share. They might not actually be real shares either, I think Ryanair use Alternative Drawing Rights in the USA and shares in Dublin and London. Shares have more rights than ADRs.

You may find a subtle difference of about 1% between markets, down to exchange rates and whatever shares are available at any moment in time.

I'm pretty sure ADR's are actually American Depository Receipts. As Victor says, they represent a certain number of shares in the company which are traded in dollars. A simple explanation of ADRs here.
