Flat mate knocked over a harddrive that was connected through a usb cable to a laptop..dropped about 2 feet.
its now making a clicking noise..i really need the data on this drive and willing to pay for its recovery.

haven't a clue who to go to though, any ideas?

Never used any of these but a quick search brought up a pretty big list of folks who'll do it for ya, while taking a huge chunk of your cash.

    I recommend (yet again!) http://www.fields-data-recovery.co.uk/
They have an online quotation form and rough guide line prices.
I hope its college work or your finished thesis on the drive 'cos its gonna be expensive!

Half price offer expires on 7th January 2008.
though they seem to have regular half price offers

As an aside, I had a customer who had 5 drives in a RAID5 fail. It cost £16,000 Sterling to recover the data...!

    thanks for all the responses!
i'll check out each one individually..the prices aren't so appealing.
don't understand why it costs so much tbh..
surely some of those hard drive engineers could drop their prices to increase their customer base.

Well, yours is possibly going to be pricey as you have likely caused the heads to impact off the disk, that means the equivalent of open heart surgery on your drive, and you need a clean room for that. You also need clean-room engineers, a replacement set of heads and whatever other hardware which is required...

The recovery companies work off the fact that if you really need the data, you'll pay!

Maybe you might try SpinRite from http://www.grc.com/cs/prepurch.htm first. It costs $89 and I have just started using it. When you install it it makes a bootable floppy or CD and the company makes great claims for it. They also have lots of testimonials. I have not had the chance to use it on a really wrecked hard disk yet.
