The Southpaw Stance ?

I am a southpaw but not in the truest sense of the term.I am not a left handed person and use my right hand for most everyday things however I am most definitely a left footed person. When I used to box I would stand with my left foot to the back and my right foot forward.I would lead with my more powerful right hand and attempt to counter with my left hand.I would have a strong left hand as well making for a very strange combination of stength on both sides of my body.Anyone else relate to this stance, style or anything else you want to call it.I know it sounds pretty awkward but I assure you that I am far from an awkward person.

My bro was lefthanded and boxed like a right handed person alot people got a shock cause he hit so hard with his lead hand also he hit hard to help. personally i think if you can box well southpaw stay that way cause it is an advantage i think, but be could if ya could box both ways that also handy, everyone's think different but alot of people stuggle with southpaws when there fast lads, if you go to the stadium so many champions are southpaws and they would be heavly outnumbered by the other stance.

I read an article about DLH recently and it mentioned that he was also a southpaw but led with his left hand.To be honest its not something I ever really noticied but must pay attention to when watching a video of him again.
Does anybody know if its true about DLH?

So if he does it pacman im sure your not alone pal.

Just as a matter of intrest how did you come about to box like this?

I am right handed and left footed.. I used to train southpaw, but I forced myself one day to train orthodox and with a bit of footwork practice, it became more natural for me to hit orthodox. I probably had a tougher time than you though because I'm also a grappler, and I like to shoot with my right hand leading.. So it's very hard changing stances all the time.

The southpaw stance is only advantageous because people aren't used to it.
All things being equal standing with your liver exposed to your opponent is just not a good idea, but different things work for different people.

You are as they term it, a 'right handed southpaw'...

    I was one too....

It basically insinuates that either hand is or can be the dominant
one. So your right hand, hook/jab is every bit as powerful
as the left cross. I found it in my case. My jab was very hard..

Most 'right handed southpaws' will do some activity with their left
hand or left foot better. My example is snooker. I'm a leftie playing snooker

It's true, Oscar is a left-handed orthodox fighter.

As is Cotto and I assume most of the Southpaw Filipino fighters are right handed Southpaws . About a 3rd of the fighters in the Philippines are Southpaws , however I would assume that they would have the same amount of left handed( on average percentage)people as most countries . It really is very strange .

I don't know it just came naturally but I can't think of any famous right handed southpaws

Mike tyson was naturally a south paw and was changed to be orthodox, id assume the reason was because the standard of training on pads an all would be better! its much harder doing pads with south paws because everything is backwards.

i learned south paw in my last 2 years boxing so find south paws easy enough to do pads with, but still a little harder than orthodox fighters, thats the only logical reason i can see for changing to orthodox if your naturally a south paw.

My friend is left handed and right footed and fights orthodox, he used to be a south paw too! punch power comes through the feet 1st so he hits harder and moves quicker in the orthodox stance! try both and see which feels better, i'd guess south paw for you because your left footed!

Marvelous Marvin Hagler, Michael Moorer and of course Joe Calzaghe.

I never heard of Tyson being a leftie. Where did you hear of that ?

    Early amateur fights ?

And is he actually left-handed ?

All his amateur matches as far as i remember plus the 1st few pro fights if i remember correct! i'd have to check again-so i'd imagine he was left handed, im sure i saw that on a documentory too.

I think you might have that wrong. Maybe some of his early amateur fights were, but I have seen a few of his Junior Olympic amateur fights (and some others) and he's definitely orthodox. One of the commentators referred to him as the man with the "big right" and you don't hear southpaws described as that.

He definitely fought all his pro career as an orthodox fighter.

I have all his amateur bouts from Barcelona 1992 and he is orthodox...

    Barcelona 1992 ??

    As in the Olympics ??

As in 6 years after he beat Trevor Berbick to win the world title ??

    Typo ??

I'm left footed, but I find it easier to fight orthodox.. Initally though, I was southpaw as it felt natural to me.. but after a bit of padwork and some sparring, I felt the orthodox stance was alot better to work with.. Still though, if I was under pressure - i'd switch back to southpaw out of instinct, but probably more for a shot than an actual punch.

The stance is about feet and not hands so in my opinion you could be a better south paw, the good thing is you can probably do both, but its best to focus on 1 so your great at it rather than o'k at both!! Footwork makes a good boxer more than anything, i move faster in orthodox because im right footed, i can and do fight south paw too but am slower on my feet when i do!

Ricardo Torres is a righty and fights southpaw ,..... which is unusual as a lot of gyms will make a southpaw a righty by style, for a number of reasons..
as was said earlier about the compatibility with trainers, also the lead hand most frequently used is a strong jab and fast too.
at a competitive level , south-paws will struggle to climb the ladder, and may not ever get the matches they deserve.

southpaws are difficult to fight,.... the way to beat them is to use the keep throwing left hooks and keep your leading foot on the outside of their leading foot, nuetralizing the effectivness of their big shots.

I don't want to look like I'm always correcting people, but if you're talking about the Columbian light-welter he's definitely an orthodox fighter.
