    Hi

I'm travelling to Perth in early February and will hire a car for about 10 days to see some of the surrounding area. Originally I had planned to travel as far as Monkey Mia and back down but having checked out some guidebooks, travelling south to the Margaret river region looks really enticing too!

We're a group of four interested in snorkelling, surfing (beginners though) and anything beachey.......

thanks for any tips on this!!

    Tough choice, OP.

I've done both and enjoyed each for different reasons.

If you go North to Monkey Mia, there's a great town to stay in called Kalbarri and there's some great snorkelling there. It's also right next to Murchison Gorge which is spectacular.

If you head south you'll have Margaret River, some spectacular vinyards and some amazing spots for surfing.

If you're in Perth, Cottesloe(spl?) beach is a good spot for surfing beginners. Make sure you head out to Rottnest Island too. Well worth a day.

After doing both North and South, I would tend to recommend the Northern route. There are some great places to stop off along the coast and the more northern you go the less commericalised everything is. I can recommend the World Heritage Site, Shark Bay. Also if you head even further north to Exmouth and travel onto the Cape Range National Park where the most stunning of places is Turquoise Bay. From there you can go snorkelling/scuba diving on the Niggaloo Reef, similar to the Great Barrier but no need for a boat, the reef is on the coast.
Lovely people up the coast and really chilled.
The South is great too, but a little more commerical and quaint.
    So Jealous,
    Enjoy!!

Oh if you can get to the Cape Range NP just do it. It is absolutely amazing and stunningly beautiful. There are beautiful beach side camp sites and amazing snorkling. I'll never forget swimming beside a massive turtle in Turquoise Bay.. Also the Pinnacles Desert is pretty cool too..

The south is really nice in a more European kind of way, but I'd go to the Northern route for beautiful scenery and beaches..
