Technomate 1000D Drone noise

Just back from the in-laws in Wexford where they have just got a nice Philips 42" tv. I thought their original tv was on the blink as it was giving off a horrible droning noise which got better or worse depending what was on screen at the time. But it is still there with the new tv, so the noise is definitely being caused by the Satellite receiver, a Technomate 1000D. When you go in to the menu area it gets increasingly worse. I tried a few things to see would it disappear but to no avail. Could the dish be off alignment? Picture quality is perfect and I don't want to start messing with something that I don't know a lot about. Anyone else come across this problem?

Is it connected via Scart or RF?

If it's connected via Scart, maybe the scartlead is poor and a decent well screened scartlead will fix the problem.

Going into the menu of the TM, go to System Setting, Then A/V Output Setting.
In here, make sure Video Format is set to PAL, and RF Type is set to PAL I (relevant if connected to TV via RF). Also, change Output Select to RGB if not already done.

If using RF, also consider the RF Channel option in that menu, as there could be interference on the current frequency (default is 40).

Thanks Byte, could be the scart lead alright, it looks a bit old. I was sniffing around in the Menu and remember that it wasn't set to RGB and I can't remember the other values and as I wasn't sure what I was doing, I left well enough alone as I didn't want to balls the whole thing up completely. I've a few things to try out there, so thanks a million.

    Forget "Gold"
The real issue is separate coax for the 4 audio signals and 5 video signals in a Scart lead. The skinny cables have a single overall screen which allows crosstalk. Loud audio will put vertical flickers on picture (noticable on large flat areas of image) and contrasty image a buzz/hum very noticeable on quiet audio.

Good SCART cables are very fat. About 2 to 3 times thicker. Gold has no value for this application and if there is damp the TV & setbox sockets will corrode faster if the plug is Gold and they are not.

    Gold only on Gold.

I nipped back down this afternoon before I saw your post Watty. I replaced the Scart cable and changed the output select to RGB. The hum/drone had disappeared when the scart was replaced, so that must have been the problem. Thanks Byte, one happy Mother-in-Law!
