right... picked up my laptop last night and i tripped over a cable running across the floor. i fell on my arse and the laptop was in my hand. my palm smacked off the lcd screen. and now its broken.

works perfectly connected to a monitor, but the screen has extensive damage to it.

it still has about 10 months warranty with dell.
    its a dell xps m1710.

what can i do? will dell fix it? will it cost me? can i use my warranty for it?

    any info is great.

warranty - only if you have accidental cover

I don't ever remember any laptop manufacturer covering cracked screens and plastics damage on the basic warranty

if you can get a quote from dell it may cost more than buying a similar laptop on eBay ( you can move the ram and drive so you can look for a stripped down one ) - it's the most expensive part of the laptop - if the laptop was older or lower specced it would not be worth getting brand new screen

someone may know the part number of a replacement screen and a price for it which will tell you if it's worth doing or not

As midnight said, no warranty will cover a cracked screen unless its an upgraded accidental damage one like PC world always push on you.
Being a dell, you probably reduced the warranty and did not add any extras to get the best price.

    WERE YOU BOOZIN???!

thats a bit unfortunate, i had a screen replaced by dell last year on a M1710, it cost over 1000e he told me. them 17" beasts have a massive resolution and cost a bomb sadly.

    breaking one is a nightmare.

    have you house insurance?:p

ah jesus thats the worst news ive gotten in my life :(

ive put so much money into it! :( and no i dont have accidental cover :( jesus this just gets worse and worse.

it cost me 2,400 3 months ago. aint gonna entertain the idea of scrapping it.
could i claim it on my house insurance?

well you can try making a claim off house insurance, add your laptop, and make a claim a few weeks later.

    doubt it tho......!

try looking around for a screen on ebay or something, gonna cost tho

On my own particular standard policy I'm covered for accidental damage, however 'high-value' items need to be itemised on the policy schedule.

The last time I checked, I think the term 'high-value' was applicable to items with a value of €2,500 or more. You might just squeak it.

try the dell support pages, might have a service manual telling you how to do it

i think this is it http://support.euro.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/xpsM1710/en/SM/display.htm

Don't forget the strong possibility of import duty and VAT added on entry.

right, just got off the phone to dell.
they are coming to fix it wednesday morning.

the fella from xps service was really helpful.
and apparently he says its covered on my warranty?

at the end of the call i asked him how much its gonna cost and he said nothing.
i said but i broke it.
he said dont worry the engineer will fix it. other than that dont mention it at all.

    ???

I was just about to suggest that you try the XPS warranty cover anyways at a long shot. I've had people who have broken their screens much the same as you and have had them fixed under warranty from dell. Im suprised even when you said it was your fault that they went ahead, I'd be more inclined not to mention its cracked and once the engineers there with the part he'll more a less go ahead and do it anyways.
Fair play though! At least its resurrecting your laptop! You'll have to baby it from now on!

I put a new ccfl backlight into herselfs Acer not too long ago. I had to open the LCD panel up and solder the new one inside it. It was a bit messy and awkward but from what I saw its not a big job to just replace the entire panel. Once you open up the housing you just need to disconnect the inverter etc and stick the new one in. The Dell engie should have it done pretty quickly for you.

i heard the only main quibble with doing it yourself is you void the warranty on it, and also there are a huge amount of screws all different sizes...

Thats mighty impressive service from the Dell engineer, well above and beyond what they were obligied to do. I'm impressed.
