Selling my Vinyl Collection - Looking for Advice

    Hi Folks,

I am considering selling my vinyl collection and am looking for some advise.

Collection was built between 92 and 97 and is mainly House - vocal, funk, dub, prog. There is also some Techno and Trance. I have a complete database of everything I have. It's about 600+ records.

I've checked out Hard To Find Records in the UK as I dealt with them in the past tracking down some rare's. Based on some brief research I have tracks that are selling for £10 / £20.

    What would you folks advise?

    Thanks in advance.

    Regards
    John

Hi, first of all, consider if you are definite about selling your collection...I have thought about it in the past when finances seemed to dictate the move but held out and didn't sell them...I will never sell my records now.

If you do decide to sell them, number one I would say forget about what HTFR.com show in terms of the value of a tune, they are overpriced and sell bootlegs etc at inflated prices imo. I think the best way to value a track is on discogs (www.discogs.com). You will get the best indication there as to how rare a track may be and what they typically sell for. Also check www.gemm.com - between these two you should get a good idea as to what a tracks value is.

I have found the prices of vinyl have gone down a lot over the last couple of years - I suspect this is down to the whole 'digital' movement and folk ripping their vinyl and in-turn selling them on. To get the best prices I would be patient and sell on ebay, gemm (www.gemm.com) or privately through boards etc. A complete collection will always demand a far lower price - let me know though if you decide to go this route, I will offer a fair price :D

Thanks for the prompt response Felixhc, I'll take your advise and spend some time on discogs and gemm. I too have pondered selling my collectuin many times over the years. The fact is though that they have been boxed and in my attic for over 5 years now, where there might be someone out there that will get some use out of them.
