whats the difference between the IXUS and powershot range? the Powershot range seem to have better optical zoom and bigger lenses, yet the IXUS range seem to be more expensive.

A bigger focal range is like buying a car intended to do everything - it'll do everything averagely.
Buying a smaller range is like buy a car for a specific purpose - it'll try to one thing and do it better than the rest.
That's the optics anyway. I'm sure there would probably be a sensor difference. But I'm a Nikonian, so I woudn't know...

IXUS = small, compact and pretty (stereotypical women's cameras!). They're feature packed in as tiny a package as possible... optical zoom and flash are the obvious compromises. Never seen a bad one though (and I sold them by the bucket load for a number of years).

yeah from googling about, it seems the powershot allows more manual control than the IXUS, i dont really care about "how pretty" it is. maybe its just marketing
