I have a mustang 66 coupe 289 v8 here in San Francisco and rather then sell it I was thinking of bring it home to Ireland. Have you any information on what it will cost to bring it into the country and what taxes/import duties I will have to pay. Also have you any info on what the road tax will be and insurance costs. Any other information such as cheap shipping companies or any other hidden costs would be greatly appreciated.

it will cost you a pretty penny , putting it on the car ferry is the eazy part , but when the boat docks thats wen your eyes start to water..

you should give the vrt office a ring and see if they can qoute you... then go about exporting it

When contacting the VRT office with your enquiry, let them know how long you've owned the car - it will have a major impact on your liability (if any) when importing.

Phoning might be quicker - Rosslare office may reply to email but none of the others have in my experience.

Dudes, it's vintage - VRT is only €50 tax €50 needs no NCT either - just worry about the shipping cost!

no its from outside EU so it will attract tax and duty...ask the VRO at the customs....however, you should make it clear you already own it and are moving home to ireland...that will have a bearing on it....it may even be exempt....(6 months ownership necessary i think....but ak the Customs for a DEFINITIVE answer.

it would probably be worth more here than in the US by the way ;-)

I'm currently restoring a 65 coupe 289,which came from California,
I also brought in a truck from Texas.
The costs depend on how you do it,I went through a uk shipping agent called Rybec, they do everything including picking up the vehicle in the states ,all the paperwork including collecting title, they pay the taxes and duty for you and you in turn pay them.
Their fee was around £1200 PLUS insurance about £150 but depends on value.
EU import duty 10% on top(22% on a modern truck) vat is 17.5% landed at a UK port,(21% if landed in Ireland) on top again,VRT will be €50 at your local office for your reg number, ands thats it:).
So its the value of the car plus shipping plus insurance taxed at 10%,this total is then taxed at the local Vat rate and then the VRT is last to be paid.
