As the title says I have no idea! I'm looking for a good decent enough laptop. Nothing spectacular but a decent one which I can get some great use from. I'd be wanting it for sharing music, videos, notes, msn etc. Pretty much the basics. I have no idea where to start looking though so was hoping people could recommend one…

As the title says I have no idea! I'm looking for a good decent enough laptop. Nothing spectacular but a decent one which I can get some great use from. I'd be wanting it for sharing music, videos, notes, msn etc. Pretty much the basics. I have no idea where to start looking though so was hoping people could recommend one which would suit what I'm looking for. I was on the DELL website and saw a few though haven't a clue which to go for. I'm a student so price is limited to say around 700 max. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated! Thanks

Cheers for the quick replies greatly appreciated. Theres one thing I'm a little unsure of, why is it that my mum's so eager for me to go with DELL? What is it about DELL cuz I've noticed neither of you have suggested it. Also, not meaning to sound like a bimbo here or anything, but those ones are a little on the "ugly" side, any pink/green/yellow/blue ones?

Probably cause its where their next door neighbour baught it from. Plus Dell are good at advertising.

I would echo joePC has mentioned there. Laptopsdirect is a good place to start.

Also - nothing ugly with that Asus one, i'm typing with one here now. I doubt you get coloured ones, why don't you paint it - Also they seem to have a opened box version for 570 with two small bubbles on bottom of screen. Surely they main, 2 bubbles on the screen protection sheet thing.

Whatever you do stay away from a sempron or celeron processor. They're crap. Try and get one with 2GBs of ram as well or at the very least 1GB of ram.

A basic one,will do the job....

You dont need dual core,2gigs of ram etc.....

A celeron/sempron with 1gb ram has more than enough power to do what you want...

You dont need to spend over €450 imo...

That's a good computer for the money, but unfortunately it comes with Microsofts Vista operating system.

Honestly, I don't think the laptop is powerful enough to run Vista comfortably.

If you order off Dells website, you'll have the option to choose Windows XP instead of Vista - if you're going for that particular machine, i'd recommend doing so. The machine will be that little bit faster and more responsive.

No, with Windows XP the laptop will run lovely.

It's just that Windows Vista is a newer version of Windows, and needs a faster computer (with more memory) to run nicely. For that particular machine (and most laptops in that price range), I think Windows XP would be the better choice for you.

I have to agree with Voodoo on this as well. Not a problem installing XP even if you do get it with vista though. Sure someone around can do it for you.
