Here's the scéal. Looking to go on one or two holidays next summer, one with family, one with a few friends. Places of interest would be southern France, northern Italy, northern Germany or places in Poland and the area we seem to know as eastern Europe.

For the family holiday we'd be hoping for somewhere around €600 each for transport and accommodation, for a week if it all possible. For the friends' holiday it'd probably need to be a good bit cheaper, but I'm open to suggestions one way or the other. I like the idea of inter-railing, if anyone knows of any cheap ways of going about it that'd be great.

So... has anyone any recommendations based on the above or otherwise?

I love the South of France - fly to Nice hire a car take in Cannes (not as expensive as you might think - plenty of cheap accommodation if you go at the right time of year and lots of reasonably priced restaurants) pop down to Monaco for a day as well it's great fun and a lovely drive too.
Funnily enough the French are much nicer in these areas as well they seem to tolerate tourists a bit more compared to places like Paris where they seem to hate them.
