I recently got a new acer x243w which has a dead pixel towards the middle of the screen, would i be in my rights to return it and get a new one?

Depends. Some manufacturers say that a single dead pixel doesn't constitute a defective monitor.

I'd contact the place you bought it from and see what their policy is.

I presume you've tried massaging the pixel to see if it fixes?

Yeah and some online pixel fixing programs no joy, it's in a really annoying spot too :(
