pressed that mediadirect button - said takes some time to sort files on first occasion - an hour later no change, so tried to restart lappie , now a pale blue screen

tried waiting with power off, removed battery etc etc, keeps coming back to a pale blue screen ( not the BSOD I was used to on old pc , no writing/msg )

    still ejects cds, etc etc
    but thats it

    F8 immediately as booting?
    Try F5.

    Hmmm:/ Windows Repair time maybe...

Have you done some sort of dual-os boot or something? Cos I remember hearing that if you do it wrong the Media Direct button will mess up your system..

    no dual OS

I had let mediaDirect update to version 3 ( while in windows) , liked the interface etc ( with the little remote etc ) that was fine

then last night I clicked mediadirect when pc off - and nothing since _ I guess its time to ring dell

but I don't want to lose stuff I put on it -

this is really annoying as I did exactly as advised rather than messing with it (I've read the nightmare stories )

a long phone call to USA later seems sorted but still miffed ( and wondering what charge is on the call)

so much for xps 24 hr support - was on hold for like a half an hour

Meida direct resides on a partition before the OS partition on the hard drive. It would appear something may have gone wrong with the update process but if you give Dell tech a ring on 1850 543 543 they should be able to sort you out. I was talking to an Indian rep. not too long ago who had to put me on hold to accept a customer service award from Dell! ( Could hear the cheering in the background) so I have no real complaints when dealing with their outsourced support.
Hopefully they should be able to sort you out.

Local charges apply. If Cherrywood is busy or closed or you are a home user then your calls get routed to Mumbai or sometimes Houston.

Dell support is crap they used to employ proper helpdesk technicians but now just have phone monkeys reading from scripts. Although this is probably fine if you don't know much about PC's as you won't be aware as to just how unecessary so many of their troubleshooting steps are.
