How long will my laptop last?

I bought a cheapy €500 Dell Inspiron 1300 this time last year. Now the warranty is up I'm wondering how long I can expect to get out of it? It's on for at least 10 hours every day. There's nothing faulty at the moment so I'm wondering what people's predictions might be?

The battery will go first , refusing to hold a charge , the rest of it could live forever , but you will most likely be looking at buying a new one after another year I would imagine ,

Batteries can be hard enough to get when they are gone , that will most likely be the start of your next laptop shopping trip , if you can get one it will most likely cost more than your willing to pay.

No. The Li-ion battery will at some stage will lose some of its charge, even if it's not used.
Get a new battery if it's economical or use AC only if you can or...don't. *shrug*

The warranty doesn't determine the remaining life of your laptop, OP. Ignore the tinfoil hat brigade. It'll last as long as it lasts. Make regular backups and continue to use it to its full. Oh dear, I do hope we're not going to venture into 'how do you perceive this glass? Half-empty or half-full?' territory.

Precisely, theres no way of knowing how long a laptop will last.
I've had people with 5-7 year old IBM's running windows 98 like a dream and I've seen 2 month old new laptops fail so inbetween now and eternity lies the life span of your laptop (well maybe not eternity but max. 5 years I imagine)
Even though the 1300's are a budget laptop fom Dell Itill like the build quality. Bought one for the g/f and its never caused an issue.

I have to agree with Karoma and majiktripp, the thing could die tomorrow or it could last for another ten years. It's kinda luck of the draw. We have an old ast (I think that's the make) computer that has recently celebrated it's tenth birthday. It still works perfectly fine. It is a piece of crap though (Although it's probably better than the pc Terry uses at the moment :D).

I've been using a Dell Latitude D800 for the past 3 years for 10 hours a day. So far so good. Had to change the battery about a year ago.

You gotta love the latitude line up, very robust and reliable, at least the older systems, the D600's,D400's and 800's all seem to weather the use and abuse quite well.

TRue. Even though the specs aren't up to todays standards it's taken loads of knocks and carries on regardless. I hope my XPS lasts as long. :)
