Hi. I have a laptop that is connected to my wireless router. I set it up a couple of years ago. However I now have a new laptop that I want to connect up. I can't find the key. Is there any way to recover the WEP key from my old laptop?

    Thanks.

In your routers settings you should be able to find it!! Otherwise, you will have to hack into your own WEP key.

This should do it for you if you are not using the software that came with your wireless card.

If you have a Netopia router and are using eircom broadband you can simply put "http://192.168.1.254" into your address bar and you can find it there under wireless on the left hand side...

But I dont know how it works any other combination of router and ISP...it might work the same for them!?

    Hope that helps..

I'm having a similar problem with my wireless router trying to connnect to PS3, can't remember my WEP key and I've got NTL broadband with a netgear wireless router. Is there some way to just reset the whole thing?

Yes. Read the manual re: resetting the router and starting from scratch.

I think there's a tiny reset button on the router which you press in with a paperclip etc for 25-30 seconds. That will revert it to its default settings allowing you to reinstall the router and come up with a new WEP key.

Cheers, no manual either I'm afraid. Tried ringing NTL but was on hold for like 20 mins so gave up.

Thanks I'll give that a try. Will I need to use some sort of software CD to reinstall it or is it one of those things that pretty much does it itself?:o

I'd recommend you change your encryption to WPA. WEP is heavily flawed and can easily be cracked. If you're on eircom and haven't ever changed your key or SSID, anyone can find your WEP key with a quick google search.

    Thanks everyone for your help.
To Karoma: I googled the manual as suggested but couldn't find anything to help me.

Just FYI how I did this: Found the IP address of the router: http://192.168.2.1/, and clicked on 'Security'.

Thanks again for your help. Now I have another issue where on the new laptop I can see that I have full signal strength, but Status is 'Limited or no connectivity'. The new computer can connect to the internet here when wired, and is already set up and connected at two different wireless locations. I have a message saying "This problem occured because the network did not assing a network address to the computer." I'll go off and scratch my head about that one...

That means you dont have a proper IP address , if you right click on the connection and left click on "repair" it might fix your problem.

Normally happens when you dont have the correct SECURITY key.
    So i'd recheck that first

Hi Thanks Eddhorse. I did the 'repair' thing a few times but no joy.

I know this is over 2 weeks old, and you've probably solved the problem already..but there is a tool for this by Nirsoft

    Its free, no spy/adware either..
