Picked it up in pcworld limerick today. Think it was a misprice as the 4 gb one was marked as 54.99. No price on it so chanced my arm with a price check..

    Brand is emtec

As far as I know these are marked as 44.99 in the sale. Pretty good price for 8GB's.

Just tested it myself and it certainly isn't the fastest drive I have. Tested a 699 mb file, took 545 seconds with this one, 184 with a dantec 2 gb drive I have. Thinking of keeping it for use in car as mp3 storage, should be fast enough for that.

Also, though it says works with windows vista, it is not ready boost compatible.

I am writ testing one of these right now, when I saw the post.

Really slow. Averages at about 7min per gigabyte. I was testing it because I thought it was one of those fake Chinese drives it was so slow. Unfortunatelly it appears to be genuine so I guess I'm stuck with it.

I have one of these drives as well, and it took over 8 minutes to copy an avi file!! (700Mb).
Surely this does not qualify as USB 2.0 speeds?

Would we be entitled to bring it back and get our money back as its not running at USB 2.0 speeds?

It is still USB 2.0 technically, it uses the USB 2.0 Interface, but cannot write to the memory as fast as USB 2.0 can transfer - Hence why its averaging 7mins / GB.

USB can technically transfer @ 60MB/s (480mbps) There is no way USB removable drives can write data to the memory at that speed.

They are cheap, large capacity memory IC's used in these drives = Slow write speeds.

Did you swap price stickers, is there any chance of the law becoming involved should I purchase this key?

Maybe your pc is a heap of crap, mightn't be the key at all

Nope, it is correctly priced, have seen it advertised in a newspaper ad for 44.99

Very helpful, but no. It is slow. All speeds listed on emtecs site are "up to". My notebook is as fast as needed and up to date and is still slow.

Give it a go and let me know. I kept the receipt and packaging just in case. :)
