Canon EF 1.4x / 2x Extender's

    hi all,
just want to get your opinion of these extenders, I'd plan to use them on this lens Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM which I already have. So in theory it would be a 140-600mm lens, I know a 600mm lens would be better that a 300mm + extender, but the price of a 500mm lens is a bit steep

I know that they decreases your lens' aperture setting by 1 stop and lose a bit of sharpness, but by how much ? just wondering if anyone has one or seen them in "action" ?

So has anyone used these before or know if they are any good ?
    thanks
    Muineach

Your lens will become a 140-600mm f/8-11. So, take that in to account.

I have the 2x extender. Great on a f/2.8 lens, but not nearly as good on a 100-400mm /f4.5-5.6.

    The 1.4 x loses a stop and the 2 x loses 2 stops. There's no work around I'm afraid :(

I have a 1.4 MKII extender, its a useful gadget, BUT if you use it with a zoom lens not only will you loose a stop but it will soften the pictures quite a bit.

But when i use it with my 400L prime its a lot better

with the lens your talking about even with the 1.4 you will loose auto focus on anything but one of the 1D series cameras. which depending on what you using it for it could be quite impractical.

between the loss of auto focus and the min f-stop is just about enough to kill it, mainly use it for animal spotting etc. so auto focus is a must :(
i just can't bring myself to pay over a grand for a lens :(

I must say, the 2x works very well with the 300mm f/2.8 lens. And that lens is a little over a grand. :D

Now, all I have to do is buy a 1D MkIII in the new year.

I have both the 1.4 and the 2x. I find them both great. Mind you, I have only used them with a 300 mm F2.8 lens, but I see no difference in sharpness between them. People say there is a slight difference in image quality between the 1.4x and the 2x, but my eye doesn't see it. I am very happy with both of them. I think that often the softness people see from using them comes from camera shake, due to the slower shutter speeds associated with smaller apertures from using the extenders. I tend to use them with the 300mm lens for sports action shots, and I use a monopod when using them, so I get very crisp results because there is little camera shake.
