With the 'Atlantic Corridor' being rolled out after the interurbans are finished, I was wondering where this leaves the N24, seeing as it directly connects the southeast with the west. Plans for dualling/mway?

I believe this was to be upgraded to 2+1 throughout but that road type has been abandoned in favour of 2+2. So I'd say after the interurbans are done we could reasonably expect 2+2 on this stretch-if the money is there.

The N24 is the Cinderella of main inter-urban routes.

There has been work recently with the Cahir bypass and earlier the Fidown/Piltown by-passes, Carrick and Clonmel Tipp town bypasses all some time away,

I regularly enough travel from KK to Limerick/Kerry via Tipp town and on to LK.
The traffic volumes are huge on the N24 now yet still plans to upgrade seem to be way way down the line.
That railway bridge where you slow to 60 KMH is horrendously dangerous ! Tipp town is a nightmare. So much money needs to be ppumped into this route to bring it up to an acceptable standard. It would be great to have a decent link between Limerick/Shannon and the South east

    ???

The N24 connects Limerick and Waterford and is a very important strategic route, so it's a pity that so little progress has been made on it. With the focus on interurban until 2010, the Sligo-Cork corridor until about 2013 and Cork-Waterford/Sligo-Donegal after that, it'll be a while before the attention is turned to routes like this.

The NRA lists these schemes as having made the most progress.
    N24 Carrick on Suir Bypass
N24 Pallasgreen to Bansha (Western Corridor)
    N24 Mooncoin Bypass (Western Corridor)

The situation with the N20, N24 and others illustrate how disasterous it is that the main inter-urbans were not finished by 2006 as originally promised. 2010 is quite a big difference and means the start dates of other projects are pushed out later (when we may not have as much funding or enthusiasm available for roads projects).

Exactly, 4 or 5 years is enormous in my view. The delays have pushed back others like the N24, and as anyone who travels this road a project that can scarcely afford to be delayed further.Unfortunately that is what has happened.

I'd prefer to drive from Waterford to Limerick than Waterford to Dublin any day. Saying that, the roads do need an improvement but it's going to be some time.

Good thing about waterford-dublin is that plans are well advanced now or are under construction for the last few years. Unlike the N24 where no specific timeframe or funds have been allocated.
Projects like the Mooncoin bypass and Bansha-Pallasgreen are vaguely outlined on the NRA website iwht no indication of plans or anything concrete at all

The AWC includes the N15 Donegal (county) to Sligo, N17 Sligo to Galway, N18 Galway to Limerick, N20 Limerick to Cork, N24 Limerick to Waterford, and N25 Waterford to Cork. However, Rosslare Europort is not included!

As for the N24, a 2+1 is planned with roundabouts being the main choice of junction. Many sections such as the Carrick-on-Suir Bypass, Mooncoin Bypass, Cahir to Bansha, and Bansha towards Limerick, have their preferred routes identified. However, the next part of the AWC to be completed will be the N18 Ennis to Athenry (Oranmore), and M17 Athenry to Tuam. I think the N17 Tuam to Sligo and N15 Sligo to Bundoran look like hot runner ups. It's hard to know where the N24 will come in to play.

    Regards!

I thought they'd dropped that road type after trying it out around the country. Am I mistaken?

2+1 is no more, all roads that could have been 2+1 will be narrow DCs.

Oh thats interesting, I drive the N24 almost daily and the traffic numbers in the evening are making coming out of the city feel like a standstill.

I didnt know that the N20 Limerick to Cork was include in the atlantic corridor though which is good to hear.

The Atlantic Corridor was first planned in the mid 90s and it was supposed to start in Sligo and go via Galway/Limerick/Waterford and finish in Rosslare now its Sligo/Galway/Limerick/Cork/Waterford. I think the earlier route made more sense.

    50% correct mate! ;)

Most 14m 2+1 routes look set to give way to the 16.5m 2+2 type, but that's only for green field schemes or retrofits involving 15m WS2 roads (can be increased to 16m by verge reduction alone). Most planned retrofits involve the older 13.5m S2 routes and given that verge reduction can only yield a maximum of 0.5m each side, the only segregated road type practical would be the 14m 2+1. For example, the N4 Boyle By-pass is in the planning stages for a 2+1 upgrade, even though other sections of the N4 are due for 2+2 or D2AP re-alignments.

    Regards!

Thanks for that, what a pity all single carragiways are not 15m+.
