Overtime - Salary

    Hi All,

I'm working for a PC manufacturing company in the midlands. My role is Technical support lead with 6 agents and a trainer reporting to me. Often I have to stay by request from management 30 minutes extra each evening for which I am not paid (because i have to stay behind if my agents get caught on call)

I am earning less than 30,000k gross per year and my manager does not seem that willing to give me time in lieu (only for doc/dentist like)

My contract is 39 hours per week 9-6pm. At this point I must have quite a lot of unpaid time but yet because I am on salary I don't get anything extra. I wouldn't mind if my salary was decent but I don't think it is.

Can I have some opinions/experiences on this?

    Thanks,
    X

I don't have a copy of contract with me at the moment but I believe it says something along the lines that I maybe required to work overtime but as much notice as possible will be given. However in my case some days I finish ontime, other days I don't. I don't have any guarantee when I will finish so any plans I have for the evening go out of the window.

I am not even given the option of coming in a bit later the next morning, because it's my responsibility to look after the team so I have to be there when they start and when they finish...

It just seems unfair to me that I cannot have a reasonable expectation of when I will finish work in the evenings and the company is not offering me anything for the inconvenience.

Yeah, it is unfair. Personally I wouldn't put up with it. I think a good start would be to have this conversation with your boss.

speak to your boss/ask HR for a copy of the overtime policy. Also keep a log of when you stay back and show it to your boss. I have to do this and when i build up 8 hours I can apply for a lieu day.

We have a system which tracks us by logging in and out. I can request a copy of the logs and see what I am entitled to...

I really don't think I'm gonna get far though. Another team lead has the same issue so maybe we can make a case together.

My manager seems to think that my measily salary means they can make me work overtime at their discretion and I just have to suck it in.

I would also advise you to talk to your manager but check your contract and see what it states. And if you can get a copy of your logs of logging in.

If there is nothing in your terms of employment about overtime, then you may need to negotiate this and come up with a solution that suits you both.

Can't imagine they would want to lose you, because of the training time and risk of getting a new person. You have quite a bit of power on your side in terms of negotiating.

hi there, i work for a large irish company that requires us to attend company meetings, discussions and so on, in our own time, which sometimes can mean arriving to work some 2 hours before our shift actually starts?? this is an ongoing thing and everybody complains but when the chance comes to make a direct complaint to the manager, everyone backs off?? not only that, but we also get constant calls on our time off as well as even days off??

can anyone help in how i can either address this alone or get the team to stand with me and get our many hours paid to us or time off??

    any tips would be great!

Ive checked my contract which wasn't updated from my previous role as Tier 2 technician.

It says under hours of work

"In addition to this you may also be required to work overtime as deemed necssary by the Company and will be given as much notice as is reasonably possible."

In my case I am never given any notice, i.e. my agent gets stuck on a call at 5:59 in the evening and I have to wait as long as he is on that call, 10 minutes, 20 minutes sometimes 30 minutes. I dont believe this to be fair since I cannot make any plans that require me to be in a certain place at a certain time.

Like I said my manager is of the opinion that forms part of my work...

I'm getting sick of it. Ive been in the company over 2 years and to p*ss me off even more they didn't even give an Xmas bonus! (normally we got 100 euros bonus bonds), not much but better than Well done we have made record sales but we don't want to give you even 100 E.

    That sucks.

Who says you need to be there when they start and when they finish? Is this your own decision, or is this a company policy?

Can you train or develop the team so that they can operate successfully without you needing to be there ALL the time?

My team can cope without me fine. I have full confidence in them. I think the issue stems not from them being unable to cope but rather who is going to lock up. A single agent cant be left behind for saftety/security reasons... So guess who has to stay behind with him/her?

I've stated to my boss that there needs to be some balance on this, i.e. if I have to stay on then I should get something back by way of time in lieu but she doesn't agree.

So why not set up a roster to share these duties evenly across the team, including yourself? So you might end up staying late maybe 1 night per week, but not every night.

easy solution is to give them the two finger salute and leave them, they are just treating you like shyte

i am getting 34k and im just training, no extra hours, fully paid expenses when i am away on business, treat me well, and a big multi as well.

if they think they can boss you around and pay you crap money to work every day flat out tell them screw themselves tbh.!
