ipw2200 firmware dropping connection

I have a feeling I'm asking in vain but I'm at my wits end so fingers crossed.

Very recently, while getting gentoo up and running, I started having problems while doing any download over about half a megabyte. The wireless connection would go down with a firmware error and restart. I've upgraded the kernel(currently gentoo-sources-2.6.23-r3)

I've tried, having googled, hwcrypto=0, and various qos options without success. It's effectively preventing me from using linux as my regular os and it's seriously pissing me off.

Has anyone encountered/solved the problem. Suggestions appreciated!

Oh, I've used this driver with gentoo and this firmware version without problem before which is what has really got me confuddled.

Can you paste the exact error output, humbert?

sorry about the delay. The error gives feck all info: "ipw2200: Firmware error detected. Restarting."

I have serious doubts even a fresh install will help but I can't think of anything else to try at this stage :(
