    I think it's just WRC phase 1 (Ennis-Athenry) . Is this right?

When it was first announced in 2003, 2008 may have been the projected opening date

Pretty shocking that in a nation 'awash' with money we can hardly find a PT scheme opening in 08!

I thought there was word recently that Ennis-Athenry won't actually have running services till 2009?

It probably depends on how well the work goes in 2008; weather, etc. But I wouldn't be shocked if it doesn't open this coming year.

Will the LUAS extension to the Point Depot not be open by the end of 2008?

With so little opening in 2008, I wonder will we see any progress on non construction aspects of Public Transport.

    1 - Integrated Ticketing

2 - Reorgansiation of buses in regional city. I know Cork needs this badly, and I'm pretty sure that the other cities need this also.

Anything else non contruction wise which could be improved.

Rail and Bus Projects to complete in 2008 include:

    * The remainder of the 100 additional buses purchased by Dublin Bus with government funding will enter service

    * The remainder of the 235 new buses on order will enter service with Bus Eireann (including the regional cities allowing for redesign of the networks there).

    * Upgrades to various QBCs in Dublin.

    * Most of the new Intercity railcars will enter service (on order are 33 3-car sets, 10 6-car sets with 1st Class; and 5 6-car sets without 1st Class).

    * The Laois Train Care Depot will open catering for the new Intercity railcar fleet.

    * The Rosslare rail line will be resignalled with mini-CTC completing the upgrade of each of the radial routes from Dublin.

    * The Sligo rail line will be upgraded to eight services per day to/from Dublin

    * A Nenagh/Limerick commuter rail service will be established

    * Phoenix Park and Clongriffin/Baldoyle Stations will open

For info, both Cork/Midleton and the WRC are due for completion in early 2009, with the LUAS extension to the Point due to complete by the end of 2009.

The ones in bold are infrastructural as opposed to new rolling stock just for clarity. They are pretty mickey mouse by anyone's reckoning and the 2 new stations are developer funded as part of planning condidtions.

Public transport is still right at the bottom of the pile I'm afraid.

Any info on what QBC improvements we can expect? Nobody seems to have any guts to take tough decisions to implement real quality bus priority measures, just bits of bus lane here and there (where it's easy).

What's really needed in 08 is the DTA to come into being and start biting.

Actually, in 2003 I think 2005 or thereabouts was the opening date.

According to Irish Rail's site, Cork-Midleton and Ennis-Athenry are due to start in early 2009, not 2008.

So a good year to take off somewhere, then!

    Timely from the Minister:
In 2008 I want to see more quality public transport coming on stream so that people can start making the switch from cars to public transport with ease. Freeing up our city centres from severe congestion is vital for economic growth and for improved quality of life.

Reliable public transport will play a central role in addressing this issue

The DTA bill is late .. it may however come in before the next session begins .... if anyone is interested ring the press office in DOT

    see

    http://www.taoiseach.gov.ie/index.asp?docID=2579

ps - isn't there already trains from Ballybrophy->Limerick ? is it an improved commuter service or what ?

PPS - for a giggle one could ask Iarnrod Eireann if they'd consider running the sets going into service for the sligo line from Portlaoise to Connolly as a paying service [ Phoenix Park Tunnel service ] ... no end of fun.

There is a paltry 2 services per day between Limerick and Ballybrophy, aiming at the market to Dublin in the morning and back in the evening.

Following much local campaigning there is now to be a commuter service between Nenagh and Limerick and the long established 25mph restriction from Killonan to Birdhill lifted.

At least the Nenagh-Limerick service will be running before the motorway/DC is open. Some small hope of people using the train service instead of the current road.

Mind you, I can't see it being fun getting into Limerick even with the new road. Traffic will grind to a halt accessing the local road network at the Newport junction (grade separation, if it is indeed done, will only allow freeflow on the N7 mainline onto the Southern Ring Road), or at the Tipperary Road (N24) junction.

pretty good answer, KC61. No big projects there.
