Well as an Honest Answer I have not done BIS but I am in first year of Computer Science.

If you are willing to work and want a challenge then study Computer Science.

If you want to piss away college then do BIS.

Do not be disillusioned they are totally different.

Put it this way, in the Immortal words of my lecturer Derek Bridge:

BIS learn how to send E-mails,
Computer Science students learn how they are sent.(eg IMAP and POP3)

I cant really answer your question though because I dont know the prospects of BIS but I do know there is a huge deficit(apparently) of Computer Scientists.

CS is very hard (infact my first year christmas tests I failed 4/5 of my tests (I didnt attend 2 of them by axxident))

However when a program works it gives a good buzz.

I advise CS because I do it and I like it and we have no printing to do.

BIS students regularily spend hours printing hundreds of pages (or so I have been told)

Computer Science gives you more options. It's not hard at all if you study it.

My qualification is Computer Science - if I could go back in time it would still be Computer Science.

I've been there, done that and got the piece of paper in Computer Science from UCC.
If you are willing to work and want a challenge then study Computer Science.
That's the same of any degree.
If you want to piss away college then do BIS.
That's completely untrue. Computer Science is full of wasters. When I did the course, half the year dropped out after first year. Not because the course was hard, they just didn't bother attending lectures.
Put it this way, in the Immortal words of my lecturer Derek Bridge:

BIS learn how to send E-mails,
Computer Science students learn how they are sent.(eg IMAP and POP3)
Derek Bridge is a super lecturer and best asset that UCC has. Instead of having him teach Theory of Computation and Artificial Intelligence (those were the courses he taught me in my day), they have him doing some crappy Internet course. Complete waste of the man.

Also, BIS people learn just as much programming as Computer Science people. Infact, it's a scandal how much you can get away with not programming in Computer Science.
but I do know there is a huge deficit(apparently) of Computer Scientists.
Wrong. There's a demand for people with I.T. skills, not computer scientists.
I advise CS because I do it and I like it and we have no printing to do.

BIS students regularily spend hours printing hundreds of pages (or so I have been told)
Seriously, are you trying to pull someone's leg here?

Now to answer your question, which course has better prospects? Definitely BIS. If you find programming isn't for you, then you can diversify away and do accounting. Also, BIS people are very well regarded in industry. A lot of American companies are very keen on BIS people and if you're good enough, you have the chance to go to the USA and earn mega-bucks.

What would you like to do when you've qualified?

Well I love computers, and I do all business subjects for the leaving cert. I ould love to work in computers when I qualify, but I know both courses offer completely different career paths, I was just wondering which one is the best overall.

I have a certificate(Hetac) in CS and i am now completing my degree in CS as well. It's BLOODY difficult. I have two mates in your college, 1 in final year and the other in first year both studying BIS. It depends on the industry you want to end up in. I started testing in the Finance industry in 2006 and i love it, ideally where would you like to work. You have to be realistic, CS requires more hardwork than BIS IMO. Are you ready to get stuck into the books or not. Also i have problems with OOD. I should have done BIS now... arrgh-too late
All the best and let us know how you get on:)

Don't know much about the degrees at the institute you're looking at...

However usually computer science is a much more regarded degree. It should be a numerate degree that exposes you to a lot of training which other degree's dont get (Abstract thinking & Maths)

BIS and the variety of IT degree's are usually watered down computer science degree's avoiding more of the technical scientific courses and filling it up with things such as HR Management and Business Management.

If applying for IT roles the likelyhood is employers wont bat an eyelid at the difference of your degree.

However if you're applying for positions which like numerate candidates comp sci is much better to have.

Computer science is one of hardest courses in UCC, as for first year...LOL you think this year is hard...im a 2nd year CS student....believe me mate, ive seen yer course this year...they have taken out the hard stuff,ye are doing groovy instead of java, yer maths course has been dumbed down....
keep onto of your continous assessment and get a good mark in it or else you WILL fail the year.... last year about 100 students came into first year...about 25 of us made it into 2nd year...

to answer thread question,. CS is better course, in 2010 there wil be demand for 70000+ CS graduates... money is good, and job opps are good.....

I advise CS because I do it and I like it and we have no printing to do.

BIS students regularily spend hours printing hundreds of pages (or so I have been told)
Well you dont know much about the life of a CS student yet... come march you'll print out your years notes.... oo and also print out all the ebook versions of the course books you should have....

its a shame derek bridge is teaching internet computing or whatever crap course he is doing in 1st year...ment to be a excellent lecturer...wish i had him teaching us C nd assembly language...our lecturer is useless :/
