Right, I got my Fujifilm S5800 for Christmas, am happy for it except for a red pixel in the view finder (not the LCD though so it's not too bad, but if anyone has any tips for getting rid, let me know)

A few things I've noticed, the flash is too powerful, whenever I take a picture, things are too bright, yet when I turn off the flash, the picture isn't clear. Is it simply a matter of trying to get the right shot, or is there a way to adjust it?

Also, I want to get rid of the annoying black lines that show up when taking a picture of a screen, be it a monitor of a pc or a TV. Any ideas on that front?

Otherwise, any basic photography tips that you can give will be appreciated.

    Liking it so far. :D

Not sure about that red dot. Is it just a focusing point?
If you shoot in auto mode the flash shouldn't over expose.
You won't be able to avoid those scan lines unless you match the refresh rate. Just Print Screen!

For a TV screen use around 1/25th to get a clear picture. There should be a setting to make the flash less powerful, in the dslrs its called FEC..is the red pixel in the centre to indicate where the focus point is? Keep taking pictures and the more you take the more you learn, experiment and always try different things. Post up some shots when you are ready. :)

an easier??? but more expensive way to avoid the lines on screens is to buy a good quality flat screen

Well, I don't think I have the cash to buy a flat screen.

No, it's definitely a dead pixel / stuck pixel as it's in a random part of the screen.

when you say viewfinder do you mean this

would it not be more likely dust seen as as far as im aware(absolute noob) the image you see through the viewfinder is a direct image and not a digitally created one and therefore no pixels

No, I mean when I switch from looking through the LCD and through the 'EVF', there is a red pixel.

Don't have specific info on the S5800 and it may be a case of return to north pole for replacement. Does the red dot/pixel appear on the image when you upload to your mac/pc ? If not you could live with it i.e. it doesn't effect the final image - if so then definitely contact Santa's elves for a RMA number and return to base.

I have had experience of an earlier model, the S5600, and while the camera was pretty darn good its viewfinder was based on LCD rather than optical technology (shudder!). The LCD viewfinder on the S5600 was quite 'noisy' but it never transferred onto the final image. The S5600 produced some really good results though.

Enjoy the new machine - It comes from a good photo stable!

No, it doesn't end up in the picture so I don't think I'll bother replacing it. Anyway, I use the LCD 99% of the time anyway.

I'm looking forward to taking it to the great outdoors. :)

Dead pixels happen. You usually need a cluster of 20 or so before anyone will consider a warranty claim.
