I can't sing or play an instrument but would love to learn to play drums. Do I need to be 'musical' to learn?

in my experience no, you don't need to be particularly musical at all at all. You should try find a friend who has a set/a teacher who'll give you lessons and see how you get on. good luck!

That site is alright but it'd definately be worth trying stuff on an actual drum set first. That said, if you find the exercises on that site easy enough then you should be grand, rhythm is probably the main thing you need. Theres a book called 'the art of the drummer' (can't think of who its by but it has a black and orange cover) and its very good. You might also want to buy a practice pand and some sticks aswell.

I'm primarily a guitar player but I can bash out an idea on a drum kit for the drummer to follow. In my experience you don't have to be musical at all but you do have to be able to keep time and to count. I've worked with drummers in the past who got lost when presented with a riff in 3/4 time. I've also worked with drummers who just couldn't count. Tell them to repeat something 8 times and you'd get 6, 7, 9 .
The best drummers I have worked with would all listen to a guitar riff a couple of times, get a feel for it and then be able to instinctively bash something out for the required number of bars with a fill every fourth or something.

it depends what road you wanna go down.

Just wanna be a drummer? no real need to be musical. But when you get anyway proficient on the drums pick up another instrument. Will give you a completely different outlook and will improve your musical interpretation 10 fold.

If you ever wanna do a few lessons gimme a pm (dublin based)

I've been a drummer for years and played with a few bands,

Although when you watch a drummer it looks easy, but don't forget that your usually moving 3-4 limbs all at the one time at different speed. Like a guitarist, bassist or singer i believe, as a indiviual, that you need to have it in you, you might not be musical but you have to have the flare and dertermenation in you, half of it comes down to your effort and the other the talent in you, it aint just about beating the crap outta skins!!!!!!!!!!!!

But anyways hope i gave you some good advice and to all the others to read this and think about playing drums:D:rolleyes:
