One person has been killed and two others injured after a tiger escaped from its cage at San Francisco Zoo, according to media reports.

The San Francisco Chronicle newspaper says that the victims were all visitors to the zoo.

Initially it was reported that four tigers had escaped, but San Francisco Fire Department spokesman Lt Ken Smith told the paper that this was incorrect.
The tiger was shot and killed during the attack, Lt Smith said.
The incident occurred in a cafe at the zoo shortly after 1700 (0100 GMT), the Chronicle reported.

The zoo was evacuated and armed police officers and firefighters sent to the scene.

It is not yet clear how the animal escaped.

San Francisco Zoo is home to both Siberian and Sumatran tigers.
In December 2006, a keeper at the zoo had her arm severely lacerated when a female Siberian tiger reached through the bars of its cage and mauled her during a public feeding.
