is there any cd drive on it?

if there is, then you can take it out, and buy a dvd drive and put it in.

Considering the low prices of CD/DVD drives these days, it is highly unlikely new laptops come shipped without a CD/DVD-RW drive.

After google searching "Advent 9115 specs", every hit I got mentioned a DVD Dual layer drive. Are you sure it is Advent 9115?

Yea every PC bought in the last 2 years would have come with a CD burner as the bare min, with most having a DVD burner.

The Advent def has a DVD burner. Take another look OP... ;)

Ok go into My Computer and tell us what disc drives show up there...

What software are you using to burn a CD?

Have a look at the physical drive itself - where you insert the CD/DVD there should be a few logos. What are they?

And if the disc drive is logo-less try this....

Click the Vista icon on bottom left of your screen, this will bring up your start-up menu. In the right hand column you will see Computer, click that!

In Computer write down all the drives that appear and list them back to us. :)

    :D

spockpower, what type of drives are these listed as (e.g. hard-drive, CD drive) etc.

Did you look at the drive itself? Are there any logos/writing on the drive?

    At this link it lists the specs as;
    • Intel Pentium Dual Core T2310,
    • 120GB Hard Drive,
    • 2 GB Memory
    • DVD Rewriter Dual Layer
    • Wireless Enabled
    • Integrated Graphics Type,
    • 15.4" Widescreen
    • MS Works 8.5

Which would lead me to believe the drive can write DVDs?

    (C : ) is vista

    (F: ) is combo socket

    (S: ) is system

if i go into C -> applications -> drivers, i have audio driver and setup.
should i install this (Realtk HD Audio Driver) ???

ok i checked for the drive in device manager

when i clicked on the cddvd drive i got this message in device status

'Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)

Click 'Check for solutions' to send data about this device to Microsoft and to see if there is a solution available.

Where did you get it? Sounds like its not configured properly.

By the sounds of it the driver isn't installed. Try installing it and that should fix your problem. You should have gotten a driver cd with the laptop.

Oh ffs, I can't believe I actually posted that. Apologies, I'm really hungover today so the brain isn't working so well. Try downloading them. I'm sure they would be on the advent site or the manufacturer of the drives site.

This might be worth a read.

But I wouldn't do the registry fix unless you know what you're doing. So spockpower, you might want to seek guidance on that part.

    More info from MS

Uninstall the driver that is on it and then reinstall the newer driver.

Since you got it in PC World, and its taken you two days to get this far why not just bring it back and get them to fix it?

Yeah, TBH you could do more damage than good. Best bet is to get somebody more experienced to look at it, such as PC World.

Uninstall the driver that is on it and then reinstall the newer driver.

CD Drives tend not to have any drivers, they all use standard ones that are part of the OS

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 148 ✭✭spockpower

    ok problem solved.

i wiped the hard drive and disks and reinstalled the os.

    it now works fine :):)

    thanks for the help anyway

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 148 ✭✭spockpower
