Okay bear with me, posting this for a mate who's kid got a 60gb PS3 for christmas. Now as it stands, they don't have an HDTV to hook it up to yet, so it's connecting to an SD CRT via scart.
Games are playing and displaying fine but the free BR disc that came with the machine is only playing in monochrome....the mate has trciked around in the settings menu but no joy. Anyone know what the problem might be? I'm kind of providing 2nd hand tech support so I can't answer specific questions until I see him tomorrow, but would appreciate any pointers about obvious things that he may have missed. I think he said that normal DVDs were only shwoing in B&W too.

While I'm here I may as well ask how you go about updating firmware on the PS3 without a direct connection to the Net, or if it's possible even. Also wouldn't mind knowing if you can get stuff like the free PS1 games onto the HDD with no connection to the Net.
Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions...

Apart from the main Video Options there are seperate Blu-Ray and DVD Display options, have you gone into these and had a look?
You can download the firmware to a USB drive or a memory card and update the PS3 that way.

what blu-ray disc did you get with it? because the beginning of casino royale is black & white.

Thx for the replies folks....pretty sure he said it was the last Harry Potter one (Goblet of Fire? No idea)
I know playing NTSC coded movies on a PAL TV will sometimes result in monochrome output (if any) and this was the only advice I could give the guy. I know damn all about the PS3.

Good man eo980, that's a great help. Do you know offhand if you can burn it to a DVDr and upload firmware that way? My last USB drive went for a swim and I've not got around to replacing it...

I can't say I know whether that would work or not, but I don't see why not. It's certainly worth a shot.

The BW issue is a strange one alright. I imagine it's a PAL TV and a PAL playstation. Just to be sure, did he buy the PS3 in Ireland?

Been googling for a bit on this, nothing so far. Defo an Irish PS3....the only thing I can think that might be at issue is the scart connection on his TV...maybe it doesn't take kindly to RGB signal. Does the PS3 even do composite?
Oh and yeah discs are perfectably acceptable for updates once you burn the correct file/folder structure.
Right bed time, I'll have a look at the thing myself tommorow and see what I can see...

The PS3 comes with a composite cable/stereo cable and scart adapter so out of the box it's not RGB compatible. It's a strange one alright. Do they have another TV in the house they can try it on? Such as a portable, that'd rule either the TV or PS3 out.

It's probably the TV. Older PAL CRT TV's run at 50hz and you need your telly to support 60hz for the proper bluray picture . :-)

=> newer SDTV's should be ok
=> all HDTV's should be ok

Yeah I'm reckoning that's probably it....he mentioned something about a Hz setting and something being greyed out. Gonna pop down to him later and see if I can sort something out. Thanks for the help...
